2	7		WHEREAS, For more than four and a half decades, every
3		-	U.S. president has declared the annual observance of Education and
4		-	Sharing Day in honor of the anniversary of Rabbi Menachem Mendel
5		-	Schneerson's birth and his contributions to education; and

6	12		WHEREAS, Rabbi Schneerson, known as the Rebbe, was born in
7	13		Ukraine in 1902; he arrived in the United States in 1941 together
8	14		with his wife Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka; in 1950, he assumed
9	15		leadership of the over two-century-old Chabad-Lubavitch
10	16		movement; he established several thousand Jewish schools and
11	17		educational centers around the world, with over 40 operating in
12	18		Texas; and
13	19		WHEREAS, this year marks the 75th anniversary of his
14		-	leadership of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement; "Chabad" is an
	20	+	leadership of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement. "Chabad" is an
15	21		acronym of three Hebrew words for "wisdom, understanding and
16		-	knowledge"; the name "Lubavitch" comes from the city which served
	22	+	knowledge." The name "Lubavitch" comes from the city which served
17	23		as the movement's headquarters for over a century and means city
18		-	of love; of all the ethical values which inform our civilization,
19		-	none is more important than love--love of wisdom, love of
20		-	humanity, and love of our Creator; these values have guided the

21	27		Chabad-Lubavitch movement throughout its history, and are the
22	28		essence of education at its best, and we should be certain to pass
23	29		on this precious heritage to all young Americans; and
24	30		WHEREAS, In recognition of Rabbi Schneerson's advocacy
25	31		that schools should stress both academic achievement and
26	32		character development, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the
27	33		first Education and Sharing Day in 1978, and the tradition has
28	34		continued each year since; the rabbi's birthday is celebrated on
29	35		11 Nissan of the Jewish liturgical calendar, or four days before
30	36		Passover, and in 2025, it falls on April 9; his accolades further
31	37		include a Congressional Gold Medal, which he received
32	38		posthumously in 1995; and
33	39		WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Rabbi Schneerson was a
34	40		champion for values-based learning, and Education and Sharing
35	41		Day represents an important opportunity for Texans to reflect not
36	42		just on how to foster academic achievement but also on how to
37	43		ensure that young people lead lives rich in purpose and
38	44		fulfillment through service and good works; now, therefore, be it
39		-	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
40		-	Legislature, hereby recognize April 9, 2025, as Education and
41		-	Sharing Day.
