2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize the proud residents of La Salle County who are gathered |
---|
4 | 4 | | in Austin on April 24, 2025, to celebrate La Salle County Day at |
---|
5 | 5 | | the State Capitol; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Situated in South Texas and traversed by the |
---|
7 | 7 | | Nueces and Frio Rivers, the area that is now La Salle County has |
---|
8 | 8 | | been inhabited for approximately 11,000 years; in the 1850s, the |
---|
9 | 9 | | United States Army briefly operated the Fort Ewell outpost on the |
---|
10 | 10 | | road from San Antonio to Laredo, and by 1871, some 60 people lived |
---|
11 | 11 | | in the nearby town of Guajoco; a number of ranchers moved into the |
---|
12 | 12 | | region, and in 1880, the county was formally organized, with |
---|
13 | 13 | | Stuart's Ranch near Guajoco designated as its first seat of |
---|
14 | 14 | | government; soon after, the International-Great Northern |
---|
15 | 15 | | Railroad extended its line into the county, with land being |
---|
16 | 16 | | donated by Joseph Cotulla, an area landowner who wanted to |
---|
17 | 17 | | encourage the railroad to pass through the townsite he was |
---|
18 | 18 | | developing; over the years, Cotulla became the most populous town |
---|
19 | 19 | | in the county, and the county seat was eventually relocated |
---|
20 | 20 | | there; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, During the first decades of the 20th century, the |
---|
22 | 22 | | introduction of commercial agriculture ushered in a new period of |
---|
23 | 23 | | development, and national advertising campaigns attracting |
---|
24 | 24 | | numerous settlers to the area led the county's population to |
---|
25 | 25 | | double to more than 4,700 residents by 1910; in addition to |
---|
26 | 26 | | cattle ranching, lucrative crops such as onions, peaches, pears, |
---|
27 | 27 | | plums, figs, and cotton became staples of the local economy; the |
---|
28 | 28 | | firstoilwellinthecountywasdrilledin1940,andoil |
---|
29 | 29 | | production continued to increase over the succeeding decades to |
---|
30 | 30 | | reach more than two million barrels of crude oil produced in |
---|
31 | 31 | | 1990; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Since 2008, shale oil production has further |
---|
33 | 33 | | bolstered the county's economic prosperity; its population of |
---|
34 | 34 | | more than 6,600 residents is concentrated in the cities of |
---|
35 | 35 | | Encinal and Cotulla, which is home to the county's courthouse and |
---|
36 | 36 | | airport; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Even as they celebrate their unique heritage, the |
---|
38 | 38 | | citizens of La Salle County are looking ahead to the |
---|
39 | 39 | | opportunities of the future, and they may reflect with pride on |
---|
40 | 40 | | their contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, |
---|
41 | 41 | | therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature, hereby recognize April 24, 2025, as La Salle County |
---|
44 | 44 | | Day at the Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
---|
45 | 45 | | delegation; and, be it further |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
47 | 47 | | the county in honor of this special occasion. |
