28 WHEREAS, The Most Reverend Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, retired
39 archbishop of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, is serving as
410 Pastor of the Day for the Texas Senate on February 11, 2025; and
511 WHEREAS, After serving the archdiocese as coadjutor
612 archbishop, Cardinal DiNardo was appointed archbishop on
713 February 28, 2006; he served as a cardinal elector in the papal
814 conclave of 2013, which saw the election of Pope Francis to the See
915 of Peter; that same year, he was elected vice president of the
1016 United States Conference of Catholic Bishops; he further served on
1117 the Pontifical Council for Culture, the Pontifical Council for the
1218 Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People, and the Council for
1319 the Economy; in addition, he has served as a trustee of The Catholic
1420 University of America; and
1521 WHEREAS, During his tenure as the metropolitan archbishop,
1622 Cardinal DiNardo pastored more than two million Catholics in the
1723 diocese, which represents the largest Catholic population in the
1824 state, and he guided over 430 priests in nearly 150 parishes and
19- more than 50 schools; he retired upon appointment of his
20- successor in January 2025; and
21- WHEREAS, Cardinal DiNardo studied at Saint Paul Seminary
22- and Duquesne University, and he received his master's degree in
23- philosophy from Catholic University and degrees in sacred
24- theology from both the Pontifical Gregorian University and the
25- Patristic Institute Augustinianum in Rome; he was ordained to the
26- priesthood for the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh in 1977 and
27- served as parish pastor, seminary professor, and spiritual
28- director; from 1984 to 1991, he worked in Rome as a staff member
29- for the CongregationforBishops,asadjunctprofessoratthe
30- Pontifical North American College, and as director of Villa
31- Stritch, the house for American clergy; he then returned to
32- Pittsburgh to pastor several parishes and serve in the chancery;
33- ordained as a bishop in 1997, he became bishop of Sioux City,
34- Iowa, the next year; and
35- WHEREAS, Cardinal DiNardo has inspired innumerable
36- Texans through his messages of faith and goodwill, and it is a
37- great privilege to welcome him to the State Capitol; now,
38- therefore, be it
39- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
40- Legislature, hereby honor the Most Reverend Daniel Cardinal
41- DiNardo for his participation in the Pastor of the Day program and
42- extend to him sincere appreciation for his many years of service to
43- the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston; and, be it further
