5- WHEREAS, Words cannot adequately express the sorrow felt
6- at the loss of Houston firefighter Marcelo Garcia III, who
7- tragically died in the line of duty on November 6, 2024, at the
8- age of 42; and
9- WHEREAS, The son of Marcelo Garcia Jr. and Rosa Giannukos,
10- Marcelo Garcia was born in Houston on June 24, 1982; an
11- outstanding athlete, he played football for the Magnolia Park
12- Sharks, and he excelled as a member of the baseball team at Milby
13- High School; following his graduation in 2000, he attended Texas
14- Southern University, where he majored in business administration
15- and continued to compete in baseball; and
16- WHEREAS, Mr. Garcia embarked on his career with the
17- Houston Fire Department in 2015; he proudly served at Houston
18- Fire Station No. 23, earning a reputation for his work ethic and
19- optimism and for going above and beyond to assist those in need;
20- committed to giving back to the community at large, he mentored
21- young athletes and volunteered with Angels in the Outfield and at
22- Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School; moreover, he lent a
23- helping hand to his neighbors, assisting with such tasks as
24- mowing yards or picking up trash; his generous efforts in behalf
25- of his fellow residents have inspired an outpouring of sympathy
26- and support, testifying to the positive role that he played in
27- the lives of all who knew him; and
28- WHEREAS, Admired for his kindness, integrity, and
29- unwavering dedication, Marcelo Garcia embodied the highest
30- ideals of the firefighting profession, and he left behind a
31- record of service that his loved ones can remember with pride;
32- now, therefore, be it
33- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
34- Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Marcelo
35- Garcia III and extend deepest condolences to the members of his
36- family: to his father, Marcelo Garcia Jr., and his stepmother,
37- Diana Garcia; to his mother, Rosa Giannukos, and his stepfather,
38- Nalan Giannukos; to his sister, Erica Garcia, and her husband,
39- Kenneth Bou; to his niece and nephew, Lily and Jordi Bou; to his
40- grandparents, Esteban and Evangelina Ballesteros and Frances
41- Garcia; to his girlfriend, Sylvia Ramos; and to his many other
42- relatives and friends; and, be it further
43- RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
44- prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
45- this day, it do so in memory of Marcelo Garcia.
