28 WHEREAS, Students, faculty, staff, alumni, administrators,
39 and members of the board of regents from the University of Houston
410 are visiting Austin on February 11, 2025, to participate in
511 University of Houston Day at the State Capitol; and
612 WHEREAS, The Tier One university is located in the nation's
7- fourth-largest city, and it serves students at instructional
8- sites in Sugar Land and Katy as well as at the UH Technology
9- Bridge; the institution is located within a region that is home
10- to a quarter of the state's population and that generates nearly
11- a third of the state's gross product; the student body, numbering
12- more than 46,600, including many first-generation college
13- students, mirrors the rich cultural tapestry of Houston; and
14- WHEREAS, Each year, the university awards over 11,000
15- degrees in 281 undergraduate and graduate academic programs; it
16- now counts more than 332,900 alumni, many of whom stay in Texas,
17- where they contribute to the success of our communities and
18- state; and

1924 WHEREAS, In the 17th year under the leadership of president
20- Renu Khator, the University of Houston has set its sights on
21- being ranked among our country's top 50 public universities,
22- which will be achieved as a result of rapidly improving
23- graduation rates, the ability to improve the social mobility of
24- its students, and the recognition of the research excellence of
25- its faculty; and
26- WHEREAS, The Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of
27- Medicine, established after the passage of H.B. 826 during the
28- 86th Texas Legislative Session, was founded on a social mission
29- to improve health in underserved communities in Houston and
30- across Texas; the college emphasizes the importance primary care
31- plays in the health of all Texans, especially in urban and rural
32- communities, and in four years, it has already graduated its
33- first class of doctors and has a current enrollment of 210
34- students; and
35- WHEREAS, The University of Houston is helping to improve
36- the health of Texans, with one in four UH students enrolled in a

40- in health-related fields are employed in Texas; and

4144 WHEREAS, The university is home to 12 nationally funded
42- research centers and 27 university research centers and
43- institutes, and it has spent over $230 million in research
44- expenditures annually, mainly in the critical areas of cyber- and
45- national security, drug discovery and development, sustainable
46- communities and infrastructure, and accessible health care; and
47- WHEREAS, The University of Houston athletics competes in
48- 17 different sports with more than 400 student-athletes; several
49- of the athletic teams have represented the university on the
50- national stage, including the Cougar men's basketball team led by
51- head coach Kelvin Sampson that has advanced to five NCAA Sweet
52- Sixteen tournaments in a row; following in the footsteps of the
53- previous year's team, the 2023-2024 team earned a No. 1 ranking
54- in the country, generating nationwide support and excitement
55- similar to the Phi Slama Jama era in the early 1980s; beginning in
56- the summer of 2023, Houston now competes in a Power 5 conference
57- after its acceptance to join the Big 12 Conference; and
58- WHEREAS, For nearly a century, the University of Houston
59- has contributed significantly to creating generation after
60- generation of productive and responsible citizens; now,
61- therefore, be it
62- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
63- Legislature, hereby recognize February 11, 2025, as University
64- of Houston Day at the State Capitol and extend to all
65- participants sincere best wishes for an informative and
66- enjoyable visit.
