5	8		WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
6	9		commemorates the memory of Jose Maria Longoria Sr., a
7	10		distinguished leader whose lifelong dedication to public service
8	11		has left a lasting impact on Starr County and beyond; and
9		-	WHEREAS, Born June 20, 1906, Jose Maria Longoria was ~~reared~~
10		-	in the small town of La Grulla, and he attended La Grulla ~~School~~
11		-	before transferring to San Diego High School in Duval ~~County,~~
12		-	where he graduated as salutatorian of his class; he also
	12	+	WHEREAS, Born June 20, 1906, Jose Maria Longoria was

13	16		graduated with honors from the Texas College of Arts and
14	17		Industries and soon after began teaching Spanish there, and in
15	18		1949, he went on to earn a law degree from La Salle Extension
16	19		University; and
17	20		WHEREAS, Answering the call of duty, Mr. Longoria enlisted
18	21		in the United States Armed Forces during World War II and became
19	22		an Army instructor in 1944, and upon his return home, he taught in
20	23		public schools before pursuing many other professional
21	24		endeavors; and
22		-	WHEREAS, Mr. Longoria held roles as an editor for the ~~Starr~~
23		-	County Democrat and as the owner and manager of Valley

24	27		Distributing Company for more than 35 years; his notable
25	28		dedication to public service was evidenced by his election as
26	29		Starr County Commissioner, a position he held from 1949 to 1972,
27	30		and by his service as an interim county judge in Starr County; as
28	31		a county official, he welcomed President Dwight D. Eisenhower and
29	32		Mexican President Adolfo Ruiz Cortines to Starr County for the
30	33		dedication of Falcon Dam in 1953; and
31	34		WHEREAS, A tireless advocate for education, he served as a
32	35		school board member and successfully persuaded oil companies to
33	36		pay their fair share of taxes, which resulted in the funding and
34	37		construction of two much-needed schools; and
35	38		WHEREAS, His many contributions were recognized with
36	39		prestigious accolades as well as in numerous publications, and he
37	40		was honored for his work as a member of the International
38	41		Platform Association and the National Historical Society; and
39	42		WHEREAS, Through his military service, his leadership in
40	43		local government, and his commitment to public education, Mr.
41	44		Longoria made a profound and enduring impact in his community and
42	45		state, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations
43	46		who follow in his footsteps; now, therefore, be it
44	47		RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
45	48		Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Jose Maria
46	49		Longoria Sr.; and, be it further
47	50		RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
48	51		his family and that when the legislature adjourns this day, it do
49	52		so in memory of Jose Maria Longoria Sr.
