7+ SENATE RESOLUTION
58 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
69 commemorates the memory of Jose Maria Longoria Sr., a
710 distinguished leader whose lifelong dedication to public service
811 has left a lasting impact on Starr County and beyond; and
9- WHEREAS, Born June 20, 1906, Jose Maria Longoria was reared
10- in the small town of La Grulla, and he attended La Grulla School
11- before transferring to San Diego High School in Duval County,
12- where he graduated as salutatorian of his class; he also

15+ County, where he graduated as salutatorian of his class; he also
1316 graduated with honors from the Texas College of Arts and
1417 Industries and soon after began teaching Spanish there, and in
1518 1949, he went on to earn a law degree from La Salle Extension
1619 University; and
1720 WHEREAS, Answering the call of duty, Mr. Longoria enlisted
1821 in the United States Armed Forces during World War II and became
1922 an Army instructor in 1944, and upon his return home, he taught in
2023 public schools before pursuing many other professional
2124 endeavors; and
22- WHEREAS, Mr. Longoria held roles as an editor for the Starr
23- County Democrat and as the owner and manager of Valley
25+ WHEREAS, Mr. Longoria held roles as an editor for the
26+ Starr County Democrat and as the owner and manager of Valley
2427 Distributing Company for more than 35 years; his notable
2528 dedication to public service was evidenced by his election as
2629 Starr County Commissioner, a position he held from 1949 to 1972,
2730 and by his service as an interim county judge in Starr County; as
2831 a county official, he welcomed President Dwight D. Eisenhower and
2932 Mexican President Adolfo Ruiz Cortines to Starr County for the
3033 dedication of Falcon Dam in 1953; and
3134 WHEREAS, A tireless advocate for education, he served as a
3235 school board member and successfully persuaded oil companies to
3336 pay their fair share of taxes, which resulted in the funding and
3437 construction of two much-needed schools; and
3538 WHEREAS, His many contributions were recognized with
3639 prestigious accolades as well as in numerous publications, and he
3740 was honored for his work as a member of the International
3841 Platform Association and the National Historical Society; and
3942 WHEREAS, Through his military service, his leadership in
4043 local government, and his commitment to public education, Mr.
4144 Longoria made a profound and enduring impact in his community and
4245 state, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations
4346 who follow in his footsteps; now, therefore, be it
4447 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
4548 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Jose Maria
4649 Longoria Sr.; and, be it further
4750 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4851 his family and that when the legislature adjourns this day, it do
4952 so in memory of Jose Maria Longoria Sr.
