| 6 | 11 | | Congress established National Teen Dating Violence Prevention |
|---|
| 7 | 12 | | and Awareness Week, which took place the first full week of |
|---|
| 8 | 13 | | February; in 2010, the initiative was expanded to encompass the |
|---|
| 9 | 14 | | entire month, and it was officially recognized by the White House |
|---|
| 10 | 15 | | three years later; the observance serves to remind Americans of |
|---|
| 11 | 16 | | the danger and prevalence of violence in teen dating |
|---|
| 12 | 17 | | relationships; and |
|---|
| 13 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Teen dating violence includes psychological |
|---|
| 14 | 19 | | aggression, stalking, and physical and sexual abuse; surveys |
|---|
| 15 | 20 | | have found that approximately 1 in 12 high school students have |
|---|
| 16 | 21 | | experienced physical or sexual dating violence; and |
|---|
| 17 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Unhealthy and abusive relationships can have |
|---|
| 18 | 23 | | lasting consequences on developing youth; victims of teen dating |
|---|
| 19 | 24 | | violence are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety, |
|---|
| 20 | 25 | | engage in drug and alcohol abuse, drop out of school, exhibit |
|---|
| 21 | 26 | | antisocial behaviors, and think about suicide; in addition, |
|---|
| 22 | 27 | | violence in adolescent relationships leads to a higher risk of |
|---|
| 23 | 28 | | violence perpetration and victimization later in life; and |
|---|
| 24 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Vigilance against teen dating violence is crucial |
|---|
| 25 | 30 | | to the safety and well-being of Texas youth, and this observance |
|---|
| 26 | 31 | | provides an opportunity to support the survivors of teen dating |
|---|
| 27 | 32 | | violence and to assist parents and caregivers in their education |
|---|
| 28 | 33 | | and prevention efforts; now, therefore, be it |
