11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 85
22 WHEREAS, The State of Texas and the United Kingdom have
33 enjoyed a long and fruitful partnership founded on shared
44 history, culture, language, and robust economic ties; and
55 WHEREAS, An official delegation from the United Kingdom
66 headed by British Consul General Sujeevan Satheesan is visiting
77 the State Capitol on February 11, 2025; and
88 WHEREAS, This special relationship dates back nearly two
99 centuries; Sam Houston, president of the Republic of Texas, was
1010 the first Texas leader to send a diplomatic mission to London,
1111 and a plaque on St. James Street still marks the site of the
1212 legation of the Republic of Texas; in addition, the first British
1313 Consulate in the State of Texas was established in Galveston in
1414 1846; and
1515 WHEREAS, The United Kingdom remains one of Texas's most
1616 significant economic partners; it is the top source of foreign
1717 direct investment in the Lone Star State, with subsidiaries of
1818 British companies accounting for tens of thousands of Texas jobs;
1919 every year, British households and businesses purchase billions
2020 of dollars in services and goods from Texas, including petroleum
2121 products, aerospace components, and medical equipment, among
2222 others; major airlines connect Texas cities daily to the UK,
2323 promoting commerce and tourism that bring our two peoples ever
2424 closer; and
2525 WHEREAS, Defense and security cooperation, including
2626 longstanding ventures such as the F-35 fighter jet program based
2727 in Fort Worth, highlights the shared commitment to peace and
2828 stability; at the same time, the two partners look to the future
2929 through collaboration on critical areas like innovation,
3030 technology, advanced manufacturing, and a secure energy
3131 infrastructure, especially as they seek to build resilient
3232 supply chains and sustainable energy solutions; and
3333 WHEREAS, Further underscoring the value of this
3434 relationship, Governor Greg Abbott and The Rt Hon Kemi Badenoch
3535 MP, Secretary of State for Business and Trade of the United
3636 Kingdom, signed a Statement of Mutual Cooperation in March 2023;
3737 through this landmark agreement, the Participants pledged to
3838 deepen economic ties, promote trade and investment, foster
3939 innovation, and coordinate efforts to bolster emerging
4040 industries, showcasing a shared vision to cultivate job creation
4141 and prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic; and
4242 WHEREAS, By supporting an open dialogue on trade and
4343 commerce within state jurisdiction and advocating for greater
4444 collaboration at all levels of government, Texas and the UK
4545 demonstrate their continued commitment to working in tandem for a
4646 stronger bilateral relationship; the friendship between Texans
4747 and Britons, and fostered by ongoing cultural and economic
4848 engagement, will continue to grow in the years ahead; now,
4949 therefore, be it
5050 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
5151 Legislature, hereby recognizes the vital importance of the
5252 enduring and evolving partnership between the StateofTexasand
5353 the United Kingdom, commend all those individuals who have worked
5454 and continue to work toward maintaining and strengthening this
5555 remarkable friendship, and celebrate the recent signing of the
5656 Statement of Mutual Cooperation as a testament to the lasting
5757 bonds between Texans and Britons; and, be it further
5858 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
5959 prepared for the Consul General of the United Kingdom in Houston
6060 and the British Ambassador to the United States in Washington,
6161 D.C., as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
