2	8		WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	9		welcome the proud members of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas
4	10		who are gathering in Austin to celebrate Alabama-Coushatta Day at
5	11		the State Capitol on February 18, 2025; and
6	12		WHEREAS, One of three federally recognized tribes in
7	13		Texas, the Alabama-Coushatta originated as separate tribes, the
8	14		Alibamu and the Koasati, who had a similar culture and were part
9	15		of the Muscogee Creek Confederacy in the Southeast; in the 1760s,
10	16		the two tribes began to migrate into what is now East Texas; and
11	17		WHEREAS, In 1813, the tribes participated in the Mexican
12	18		War of Independence from Spain, and the newly formed Mexican
13	19		government offered them tracts of land as an expression of
14	20		gratitude for their service; two decades later, Sam Houston
15	21		granted the tribe land between the Neches and Sabine Rivers in
16	22		exchange for their assistance in guiding and helping to feed the
17	23		Texan army who had fled from Santa Anna's army during the Texas
18	24		Revolution; and
19	25		WHEREAS, The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas comprises
20	26		approximately 1,200 members, half of whom live on the
21	27		reservation's 10,200 acres in the Big Thicket area of East Texas;
22	28		the tribe is a fully functioning sovereign government with a full
23	29		array of health and human services, which provides employment to
24	30		hundreds of members who serve as teachers, doctors, and peace
25	31		officers, and the community sustains businesses, including a
26	32		health clinic, a day-care center, a solid waste facility,
27	33		churches, and retail shops; and
28	34		WHEREAS, Home to one of the most scenic recreational areas
29	35		in the state, the reservation is visited every year by thousands
30	36		of people who enjoy camping, hiking, and picnicking; the
31	37		reservation is also home to the Naskila Casino and an annual
32	38		powwow and music festival; and
33	39		WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich heritage as they work to
34	40		build a brighter future, the Alabama-Coushatta people may indeed
35	41		take great pride in their unique contributions to the history and
36	42		culture of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
37	43		RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
38		-	Legislature, hereby recognize February 18, 2025, as
	44	+	Legislature, hereby recognize February 11, 2025, as
39	45		Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas Day at the Capitol and extend a
40	46		warm welcome to the visiting members of the tribe; and, be it

42	48		RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
43	49		honor of this special occasion.
