68 | 68 | | (1) During World War II, more than six million 8 |

69 | 69 | | American women entered the workforce to fill the 9 |
---|
70 | 70 | | vacancies left by men who had joined the Armed 10 |

71 | 71 | | Forces and support the Home Front. Millions of 11 |
---|
72 | 72 | | women already working outside the home shifted to 12 |
---|
73 | 73 | | employment in critical industries to support the war 13 |
---|
74 | 74 | | effort. 14 |
---|
75 | 75 | | (2) Women went to work or volunteer full-time 15 |
---|
76 | 76 | | in factories, farms, shipyards, banks, and other in-16 |

77 | 77 | | stitutions in support of the U.S. military overseas. 17 |

78 | 78 | | They worked with the United Service Organizations 18 |

79 | 79 | | and the American Red Cross, drove street cars, riv-19 |

96 | 96 | | shipyards, aircraft factories, and other areas of the 10 |

98 | 98 | | (6) Women in the workforce faced the ‘‘double 12 |
---|
99 | 99 | | burden’’ of responsibilities on the job and at home 13 |
---|
100 | 100 | | as the primary caregivers and wage earners during 14 |

102 | 102 | | (7) ‘‘Rosies’’ persevered often in the face of 16 |
---|
103 | 103 | | harassment, discrimination, and prejudice to support 17 |
---|
104 | 104 | | their country and families in a time of great need. 18 |

105 | 105 | | Despite equal pay regulations, women were regularly 19 |
---|
106 | 106 | | paid 10 to 15 cents an hour lower than their male 20 |
---|
107 | 107 | | counterparts even during wartime. 21 |

108 | 108 | | (8) Black, Latina, Indigenous, Asian American, 22 |
