3838 (a) I
3939 NGENERAL.—The Secretary of Veterans Affairs 5
4040 shall enter into an agreement with the National Academies 6
4141 of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (in this section re-7
4242 ferred to as the ‘‘National Academies’’), under which the 8
4343 National Academies shall conduct a study on the preva-9
4444 lence and mortality of cancers among covered individuals. 10
4545 (b) S
4646 TUDY.—The study required under subsection (a) 11
4747 shall— 12
4848 (1) identify exposures associated with military 13
4949 occupations of covered individuals, including relating 14
5050 to chemicals, compounds, agents, and other phe-15
5151 nomena; 16
5252 (2) review the literature to determine associa-17
5353 tions between exposures referred to in paragraph (1) 18
5454 and the incidence or prevalence of overall cancer 19
5555 morbidity, overall cancer mortality, and increased in-20
5656 cidence or prevalence of— 21
5757 (A) brain cancer; 22
5858 (B) colon and rectal cancers; 23
5959 (C) kidney cancer; 24
6060 (D) lung cancer; 25
6161 (E) melanoma skin cancer; 26

7272 priate by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, in 8
7373 consultation with the National Academies; and 9
7474 (3) determine, to the extent possible, the preva-10
7575 lence of and mortality from the cancers specified in 11
7676 paragraph (2) among covered individuals by using 12
7777 available sources of data, which may include— 13
7878 (A) health care and other administrative 14
7979 databases of the Department of Veterans Af-15
8080 fairs, the Department of Defense, and the indi-16
8181 vidual Services, respectively; 17
8282 (B) the national death index maintained by 18
8383 the National Center for Health Statistics of the 19
8484 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; 20
8585 and 21
8686 (C) the study conducted under section 750 22
8787 of the William M. (Mac) Thornberry National 23
8888 Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021 24
8989 (Public Law 116–283; 134 Stat. 3716). 25

9393 (c) REPORT.—At the conclusion of the study required 1
9494 under subsection (a), the National Academies shall submit 2
9595 to the Secretary and to the Committees on Veterans’ Af-3
9696 fairs of the House of Representatives and the Senate a 4
9797 report containing the results of the study described in sub-5
9898 section (b). 6

100100 OVEREDINDIVIDUALDEFINED.—In this sec-7
101101 tion, the term ‘‘covered individual’’ means an individual 8
102102 who served on active duty in the Army, Navy, Air Force, 9
103103 or Marine Corps as an aircrew member of a fixed-wing 10
104104 aircraft, including as a pilot, navigator, weapons systems 11
105105 operator, aircraft system operator, or any other crew 12
106106 member who regularly flew in a fixed-wing aircraft. 13
