20 | 20 | | SEC. 2. FINDINGS. 6 |
---|
21 | 21 | | Congress finds the following: 7 |
---|
22 | 22 | | (1) In the United States, one-third of all school- 8 |
---|
23 | 23 | | aged children are overweight or obese and very few 9 |
---|

31 | 31 | | daily, with more than 70 percent qualifying for free 5 |

32 | 32 | | or reduced-price meals based on family household in-6 |

---|
34 | 34 | | (3) Improving the healthfulness of school meals, 8 |
---|
35 | 35 | | including serving more fruits and vegetables, will im-9 |
---|
36 | 36 | | prove children’s eating habits and their health. The 10 |
---|
37 | 37 | | Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that 11 |
---|
38 | 38 | | children ‘‘make half their plate fruits and vegeta-12 |
---|
39 | 39 | | bles’’ at each meal. 13 |
---|
40 | 40 | | (4) Research indicates that school salad bars 14 |
---|
41 | 41 | | are an effective strategy to increase children’s con-15 |
---|
42 | 42 | | sumption of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. 16 |
---|
43 | 43 | | (5) Salad bars are one of the easiest ways for 17 |
---|
44 | 44 | | school food authorities to meet the new school lunch 18 |
---|
45 | 45 | | nutrition standards that require serving a fruit and 19 |
---|
46 | 46 | | a vegetable every day, a colorful variety of vegetables 20 |
---|
47 | 47 | | every week, and that students select at least one-half 21 |
---|
48 | 48 | | cup of a fruit or a vegetable at lunch. 22 |
---|
49 | 49 | | (6) Salad bars are effective in elementary, mid-23 |
---|
50 | 50 | | dle, and high school, they empower students to try 24 |
---|
51 | 51 | | new fruits and vegetables and are a tangible example 25 |

66 | 66 | | enactment of the Salad Bars in Schools Expansion 10 |

67 | 67 | | Act, the Secretary shall establish and implement a 11 |

68 | 68 | | plan to promote the use of salad bars in schools par-12 |
---|
69 | 69 | | ticipating in the school lunch program established 13 |
---|
70 | 70 | | under this Act. 14 |

72 | 72 | | RAINING AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE .— 15 |

73 | 73 | | In carrying out the plan described in paragraph (1), 16 |

74 | 74 | | the Secretary shall provide training and technical as-17 |
---|
75 | 75 | | sistance to eligible entities to assist the entities in 18 |
---|
76 | 76 | | establishing salad bars in schools. Such training and 19 |
---|
77 | 77 | | technical assistance may include— 20 |
---|
78 | 78 | | ‘‘(A) webinars; 21 |
---|
79 | 79 | | ‘‘(B) training workshops; 22 |
---|
80 | 80 | | ‘‘(C) implementation resources; 23 |
---|
81 | 81 | | ‘‘(D) nutrition education; and 24 |
