1616 Supporting the goals and ideals of International Mother Lan-
1717 guage Day in bringing attention to the importance of
1818 preserving linguistic and cultural heritage through edu-
1919 cation.
2020 Whereas the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cul-
2121 tural Organization (UNESCO) established International
2222 Mother Language Day on November 17, 1999, to pro-
2323 mote linguistic diversity and multilingualism;
2424 Whereas the annual International Mother Language Day
2525 celebration date, February 21, was chosen to commemo-
2626 rate the day in 1952 in Bangladesh when students died
2727 demonstrating for recognition of Bengali as a national
2828 language of Pakistan;

3232 Whereas UNESCO establishes a different theme for the an-
3333 nual celebration of International Mother Language Day
3434 each year, promoting various aspects of linguistic edu-
3535 cation;
3636 Whereas 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of International
3737 Mother Language Day, reaffirming the importance of lin-
3838 guistic diversity and multilingualism in fostering dignity,
3939 peace, and understanding;
4040 Whereas, according to the UNESCO Atlas of the World’s
4141 Languages in Danger, of the over 8,000 existing lan-
4242 guages in the world, approximately 1,181 languages are
4343 not in use, and approximately 6,000 languages are classi-
4444 fied as ‘‘endangered’’ with the potential to disappear
4545 within a few generations;
4646 Whereas the United States Census Bureau has identified over
4747 350 languages spoken in the United States, at least 160
4848 of which are distinct Native North American languages;
4949 Whereas according to the UNESCO Atlas of the World’s
5050 Languages in Danger, 280 Native North American lan-
5151 guages were spoken in the continental United States
5252 when the Europeans arrived and more than 115 are al-
5353 ready extinct, with many more critically endangered; and
5454 Whereas the United States enjoys a rich and diverse cultural
5555 heritage and preserving existing languages is an essential
5656 piece to preserving this heritage: Now, therefore, be it
5757 Resolved, That the House of Representatives— 1
5858 (1) supports the goals and ideals of Inter-2
5959 national Mother Language Day; and 3
