4343 prevalence estimates range from 8 to 13 percent of
4444 women globally;
4545 Whereas the most recent published data, a 2004 study, esti-
4646 mates the annual burden of PCOS in the United States
4747 is $4,360,000,000, and this figure pertains to women’s
4848 reproductive years alone and does not consider the cost
4949 of other comorbidities, including obstetrical complications
5050 or the cost of metabolic morbidities in post-menopause or
5151 adolescence;
5252 Whereas PCOS can affect girls from the onset of puberty and
5353 throughout the remainder of their lives;
5454 Whereas the symptoms of PCOS include infertility, irregular
5555 or absent menstrual periods, acne, weight gain, thinning
5656 of scalp hair, excessive facial and body hair growth, nu-
5757 merous small ovarian cysts, pelvic pain, and mental
5858 health problems;
5959 Whereas women with PCOS have higher rates of psychosocial
6060 disorders, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder,
6161 and eating disorders, and are at greater risk for suicide;
6262 Whereas adolescents with PCOS often are not diagnosed,
6363 many of whom have metabolic dysfunction and insulin re-
6464 sistance, which can lead to type 2 diabetes, cardio-
6565 vascular disease, obstructive sleep apnea, nonalcoholic
6666 fatty liver disease, and endometrial cancer at a young
6767 adult age;
6868 Whereas PCOS is the most common cause of female infer-

7979 heart disease (the leading cause of death among women);
8080 Whereas women with PCOS have a more than 50 percent
8181 chance of developing type 2 diabetes or prediabetes be-
8282 fore the age of 40;
8383 Whereas women with PCOS may be at a higher risk for
8484 breast cancer and ovarian cancer, and have a 3 times
8585 higher risk for developing endometrial cancer compared
8686 to women who do not have PCOS;
8787 Whereas research has found genetic evidence of a causal link
8888 to depression in PCOS;
8989 Whereas research has found genetic correlations with obesity,
9090 fasting insulin, type 2 diabetes, lipid levels, and coronary
9191 artery disease, indicating shared genetic architecture be-
9292 tween metabolic traits and PCOS;
9393 Whereas adolescents with PCOS are at markedly increased

9595 ease;
9696 Whereas PCOS negatively alters metabolic function inde-
9797 pendent of, but exacerbated by, increased BMI;
9898 Whereas an estimated 50 percent of women with PCOS are
9999 undiagnosed, and many remain undiagnosed until they
100100 experience fertility difficulties or develop type 2 diabetes
101101 or other cardiometabolic disorders;
102102 Whereas the cause of PCOS is unknown, but researchers
