1313 Recognizing and commemorating the contributions of
1414 contemporary Latinas in the State of Illinois.
1515 Whereas the United States commemorates National Women’s
1616 History Month every March to recognize and honor the
1717 contributions of women throughout the history of the
1818 United States and the women making history now;
1919 Whereas Latinas contribute to the cultural, economic, and
2020 political power of the United States;
2121 Whereas there are approximately 32,244,214 Latinas living
2222 in the United States, and 1,165,312 Latinas live in the
2323 State of Illinois;
2424 Whereas Latinas continue to be greatly underrepresented in
2525 elected office;

2929 Whereas Latinas represent 9.6 percent of the United States
3030 population but only 2.6 percent of elected officeholders in
3131 State and 3.6 percent in Federal offices across the coun-
3232 try;
3333 Whereas the State of Illinois is a model for supporting and
3434 electing Latinas;
3535 Whereas the State of Illinois has significantly increased the
3636 representation of Latinas at all levels of government, in-
3737 cluding electing the diverse and powerful Latinas of Illi-
3838 nois’ Third Congressional District, such as—
3939 (1) Village of Franklin Park Clerk, April Arellano;
4040 (2) Village of Addison Trustee, Maria Reyes;
4141 (3) Bensenville Village Trustee, Rosa Carmona;
4242 (4) Hanover Township Trustee, Denise Noyola;
4343 (5) Council Member for the City of Elgin,
4444 Rosamaria Martinez;
4545 (6) Alderperson Ruth Cruz;
4646 (7) Alderperson Jessie Fuentes;
4747 (8) Alderperson Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez;
4848 (9) Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of
4949 Greater Chicago Board Commissioner Eira L. Corral

5757 Whereas many of the Latinas elected to their positions are
5858 the first Latinas in their roles or the first Latinas to
5959 serve in their communities;

6363 Whereas the work of Latinas at all levels of government in
6464 the State of Illinois has resulted in the codification of
6565 women’s rights and the expansion of health care for un-
6666 documented people;
6767 Whereas the grassroots, organizing, and political participa-
6868 tion of Latinas resulted in the election of the first Latina
6969 from the Midwest to Congress;
7070 Whereas the voices, lived experiences, and contributions of
7171 Latinas in the State of Illinois continue to have long-last-
7272 ing, positive impacts for the communities that they serve;
7373 Whereas Latinas representing Latinas is necessary to build
7474 a multicultural, multigenerational movement that ac-
7575 knowledges the shared humanity of others;
7676 Whereas significant progress has been made to increase the
7777 representation of Latinas in all decision-making spaces;
7878 and
7979 Whereas there is still work that needs to be done until
8080 Latinas achieve equitable representation in all sectors, in-
8181 dustries, and leadership roles: Now, therefore, be it
8282 Resolved, That the House of Representatives— 1
8383 (1) celebrates the impact and contributions of 2
8484 contemporary Latinas in the State of Illinois; 3
8585 (2) acknowledges the value of Latinas and the 4
8686 essential role they play in this Nation’s multicul-5
8787 tural, multigenerational democracy; and 6
8888 (3) recognizes the importance of accurate and 7
8989 timely data on Latinas living in the United States 8
9090 and the role that the United States Census Bureau 9
