13	13	Recognizing and commemorating the contributions of
14	14	contemporary Latinas in the State of Illinois.
15	15	Whereas the United States commemorates National Women’s
16	16	History Month every March to recognize and honor the
17	17	contributions of women throughout the history of the
18	18	United States and the women making history now;
19	19	Whereas Latinas contribute to the cultural, economic, and
20	20	political power of the United States;
21	21	Whereas there are approximately 32,244,214 Latinas living
22	22	in the United States, and 1,165,312 Latinas live in the
23	23	State of Illinois;
24	24	Whereas Latinas continue to be greatly underrepresented in
25	25	elected office;

29	29	Whereas Latinas represent 9.6 percent of the United States
30	30	population but only 2.6 percent of elected officeholders in
31	31	State and 3.6 percent in Federal offices across the coun-
32	32	try;
33	33	Whereas the State of Illinois is a model for supporting and
34	34	electing Latinas;
35	35	Whereas the State of Illinois has significantly increased the
36	36	representation of Latinas at all levels of government, in-
37	37	cluding electing the diverse and powerful Latinas of Illi-
38	38	nois’ Third Congressional District, such as—
39	39	(1) Village of Franklin Park Clerk, April Arellano;
40	40	(2) Village of Addison Trustee, Maria Reyes;
41	41	(3) Bensenville Village Trustee, Rosa Carmona;
42	42	(4) Hanover Township Trustee, Denise Noyola;
43	43	(5) Council Member for the City of Elgin,
44	44	Rosamaria Martinez;
45	45	(6) Alderperson Ruth Cruz;
46	46	(7) Alderperson Jessie Fuentes;
47	47	(8) Alderperson Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez;
48	48	(9) Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of
49	49	Greater Chicago Board Commissioner Eira L. Corral

57	57	Whereas many of the Latinas elected to their positions are
58	58	the first Latinas in their roles or the first Latinas to

63	63	Whereas the work of Latinas at all levels of government in
64	64	the State of Illinois has resulted in the codification of
65	65	women’s rights and the expansion of health care for un-
66	66	documented people;
67	67	Whereas the grassroots, organizing, and political participa-
68	68	tion of Latinas resulted in the election of the first Latina
69	69	from the Midwest to Congress;
70	70	Whereas the voices, lived experiences, and contributions of
71	71	Latinas in the State of Illinois continue to have long-last-
72	72	ing, positive impacts for the communities that they serve;
73	73	Whereas Latinas representing Latinas is necessary to build
74	74	a multicultural, multigenerational movement that ac-
75	75	knowledges the shared humanity of others;
76	76	Whereas significant progress has been made to increase the
77	77	representation of Latinas in all decision-making spaces;
78	78	and
79	79	Whereas there is still work that needs to be done until
80	80	Latinas achieve equitable representation in all sectors, in-
81	81	dustries, and leadership roles: Now, therefore, be it
82	82	Resolved, That the House of Representatives— 1
83	83	(1) celebrates the impact and contributions of 2
84	84	contemporary Latinas in the State of Illinois; 3
85	85	(2) acknowledges the value of Latinas and the 4
86	86	essential role they play in this Nation’s multicul-5
87	87	tural, multigenerational democracy; and 6
88	88	(3) recognizes the importance of accurate and 7
89	89	timely data on Latinas living in the United States 8
90	90	and the role that the United States Census Bureau 9
