1414 Expressing support for the designation of May 15, 2025,
1515 as ‘‘Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness Day’’ to raise
1616 awareness of and promote research on the disorder.
1717 Whereas Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic dis-
1818 order and the most common of the genetic disorders that
1919 cause life-threatening obesity in children;
2020 Whereas PWS usually results from problems on chromosome
2121 15;
2222 Whereas PWS is a complex genetic disorder that occurs in
2323 approximately 1 out of every 15,000 births;
2424 Whereas, in the United States, there are approximately
2525 10,000 to 20,000 living individuals with PWS;
2626 Whereas PWS affects—

3131 (2) all races and ethnicities;
3232 Whereas PWS causes an extreme and insatiable appetite,
3333 often resulting in severe obesity;
3434 Whereas severe obesity is the major cause of death for indi-
3535 viduals with PWS;
3636 Whereas one of the main symptoms of PWS is the inability
3737 to control eating and constant hunger, and other symp-
3838 toms include low muscle tone and poor feeding as an in-
3939 fant, delays in intellectual development, and difficulty
4040 controlling emotions;
4141 Whereas PWS causes cognitive and learning disabilities and
4242 behavioral difficulties, including obsessive-compulsive dis-
4343 order and difficulty controlling emotions;
4444 Whereas PWS affects many aspects of the person’s life, in-
4545 cluding eating, behavior and mood, physical growth, and
4646 intellectual development;
4747 Whereas PWS can affect hormone production and cause
4848 other health complications;
4949 Whereas PWS can lead to obesity and related complications
5050 such as heart issues, diabetes, and high blood pressure;
5151 Whereas studies have shown that individuals with PWS have
5252 a high morbidity and mortality rate;
5353 Whereas individuals with PWS, like many other rare dis-
5454 orders, experience challenges with obtaining a diagnosis,
5555 limited treatment options, and difficulty finding and ac-
5656 cessing treatment centers and physicians with expertise
5757 in PWS;
5858 Whereas there is no known cure for PWS;

6262 Whereas early diagnosis of PWS allows families to access
6363 treatment, intervention services, and support from health
6464 professionals, advocacy organizations, and other families
6565 who are dealing with PWS;
6666 Whereas discovered treatments, including the use of human
6767 growth hormone, are improving the quality of life for in-
6868 dividuals with the syndrome and offer new hope to fami-
6969 lies, but many difficult symptoms associated with PWS
7070 remain untreated;
7171 Whereas increased research into PWS—
7272 (1) may lead to a better understanding of the dis-
7373 order, more effective treatments, and an eventual cure for
7474 PWS; and
7575 (2) is likely to lead to a better understanding of
7676 common public health concerns, including childhood obe-
7777 sity and mental health;
7878 Whereas there is a critical need for research and development
7979 to advance treatments for PWS;
8080 Whereas studies have shown that individuals with PWS have
8181 a high morbidity and mortality rate;
8282 Whereas the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association, a nonprofit
8383 organization established in 1975, provides parents and
8484 health care professionals with a national and inter-
8585 national network of information, support services, and re-
8686 search endeavors to expressly meet the needs of children
8787 and adults with PWS and their families;
8888 Whereas the organization comprises parents, professionals,
8989 and other interested individuals who are taking active
9090 roles in improving the lives of people with PWS;
9191 Whereas the goals of the organization include—

9595 (1) normalizing life for people with PWS and their

9797 (2) improving communication and education; and
9898 (3) acting as a lifetime advocate for affected individ-
9999 uals;
100100 Whereas the association also supports research, interdiscipli-
101101 nary communication, and increased professional knowl-
102102 edge of treatments; and
103103 Whereas ‘‘Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness Day’’ is ex-
104104 pected to be observed in the United States for years to
105105 come, providing hope and information for patients, care-
106106 givers, and families around the country: Now, therefore,
107107 be it
108108 Resolved, That the House of Representatives— 1
109109 (1) supports the designation of ‘‘Prader-Willi 2
110110 Syndrome Awareness Day’’; 3
111111 (2) applauds the efforts of advocates and orga-4
112112 nizations that encourage awareness, promote re-5
113113 search, and provide education, support, and hope to 6
114114 those impacted by Prader-Willi syndrome; 7
115115 (3) recognizes the commitment of parents, fam-8
116116 ilies, researchers, health professionals, and others 9
117117 dedicated to finding an effective treatment and even-10
118118 tual cure for Prader-Willi syndrome; and 11
119119 (4) recognizes the importance of, with respect 12
120120 to Prader-Willi syndrome— 13
