2020 Supporting the designation of March 2025 as Endometriosis
2121 Awareness Month.
2222 Whereas endometriosis is a disease in which the type of tis-
2323 sue that normally grows in the uterus (the endometrium)
2424 also grows outside of the uterus;
2525 Whereas endometriosis is one of the most common gyneco-
2626 logical diseases in women, and occurs in 1 in 10 women
2727 of reproductive age;
2828 Whereas the cause of endometriosis is not known, but risk
2929 factors include—
3030 (1) having a mother, sister, or daughter with endo-
3131 metriosis;

3535 (2) menstrual cycles that started at an early age;
3636 (3) menstrual cycles that are short; and
3737 (4) periods that are heavy and last more than 7
3838 days;
3939 Whereas, for many women, the only way currently available
4040 to be certain of an endometriosis diagnosis is to have a
4141 surgical procedure known as a laparoscopy;
4242 Whereas women experience a delay from three to eleven years
4343 between the first symptoms of pain and the final endo-
4444 metriosis diagnosis, which can lead to lower quality of life
4545 and high medical costs;
4646 Whereas, for many girls and women, endometriosis is a life-
4747 long chronic disease that can affect relationships, school,
4848 work, fertility, and daily life;
4949 Whereas the primary symptoms of endometriosis include pain
5050 and infertility, and many with endometriosis live with de-
5151 bilitating, chronic pain;
5252 Whereas, approximately 75 percent of women with endo-
5353 metriosis experience a misdiagnosis;
5454 Whereas the management of symptoms of endometriosis may
5555 include surgery, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)
5656 antagonists, and many other medical treatments;
5757 Whereas endometriosis is associated with increased health
5858 care costs and poses a substantial burden to patients in
5959 the health care system;
6060 Whereas, in the United States, the estimated average direct
6161 health care cost associated with endometriosis per patient
6262 is more than $13,000 per year;
6363 Whereas 40 percent of women with endometriosis report im-
6464 paired career growth due to endometriosis, and approxi-

6868 mately 50 percent of women with endometriosis experi-
6969 ence a decreased ability to work;
7070 Whereas the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
7171 found that the average number of ‘‘bed days’’ for pa-
7272 tients with endometriosis was 18 days per year;
7373 Whereas women with endometriosis can lose 11 hours per
7474 workweek through lost productivity;
7575 Whereas the physical and psychological impact of endo-
7676 metriosis affects all domains of life, including social life,
7777 relationships, and work;
7878 Whereas medical societies and patient groups have expressed
7979 the need for greater public attention and updated re-
8080 sources targeted to public education about this unmet
8181 health need for women;
8282 Whereas there is a need for more research and updated
8383 guidelines to treat endometriosis;
8484 Whereas there is an ongoing need for additional clinical re-
8585 search and treatment options to manage this debilitating
8686 disease; and
8787 Whereas there is no known cure for endometriosis: Now,
8888 therefore, be it
8989 Resolved, That the House of Representatives— 1
9090 (1) strongly supports the goals and ideals of 2
9191 Endometriosis Awareness Month; 3
9292 (2) recognizes the need for early detection and 4
9393 treatment of endometriosis, increased education for 5
9494 health care providers, and more culturally competent 6
9595 care; 7
