25	25	Recognizing the heritage, culture, and contributions of
26	26	Latinas in the United States.
27	27	Whereas the United States celebrates National Women’s His-
28	28	tory Month every March to recognize and honor the
29	29	achievements of women throughout the history of the
30	30	United States;
31	31	Whereas there are approximately 31,000,000 Latinas living
32	32	in the United States;
33	33	Whereas, approximately 1 in 6 women in the United States
34	34	is a Latina;

38	38	Whereas Latinas have helped shape the history of the United
39	39	States since its inception;
40	40	Whereas Latinas contribute to the society of the United
41	41	States through working in many industries, including
42	42	business, education, science and technology, medicine, en-
43	43	gineering, mathematics, literature and the arts, the mili-
44	44	tary, agriculture, hospitality, and public service;
45	45	Whereas Latinas come from diverse cultures across North
46	46	America, Central America, South America, and the Car-
47	47	ibbean, and Afro-Latinas face disparities in recognition;
48	48	Whereas Latinas are dedicated public servants, holding posts
49	49	at the highest levels of the Federal Government, includ-
50	50	ing the Supreme Court of the United States, Cabinet-
51	51	level positions, the United States Senate, and the United
52	52	States House of Representatives;
53	53	Whereas there are approximately 45,710 Latinas serving in
54	54	the Armed Forces, and the first Latina to become a gen-
55	55	eral in the Marine Corps reached that rank in 2006;
56	56	Whereas Latinas are breaking the glass ceiling in science,
57	57	technology, engineering, and mathematics, with the first
58	58	Latina to travel into space doing so during a 9-day Space
59	59	Shuttle Discovery mission in 1993;
60	60	Whereas Latinas contributed $1,300,000,000 to the United
61	61	States gross domestic product in 2021;
62	62	Whereas Latina activists have led the fight for civil rights,
63	63	including labor rights, LGBTQ rights, women’s rights,
64	64	and racial equality;
65	65	Whereas Latinas like Hollywood icon Raquel Welch have cre-
66	66	ated award-winning art;

70	70	Whereas Latinas are recipients of Emmy, Grammy, Oscar,
71	71	and Tony awards, including Rita Moreno, who earned all
72	72	4 awards between 1961 and 1977;
73	73	Whereas Latina singers and songwriters, such as Selena,
74	74	Celia Cruz, Shakira, Gloria Estefan, and Linda Ronstadt,
75	75	have made lasting and significant contributions to music
76	76	throughout the world;
77	77	Whereas Latinas serve in the medical profession, and the
78	78	first female and first Hispanic Surgeon General of the
79	79	United States was appointed in 1990;
80	80	Whereas Latinas serve as journalists, reporting vital news
81	81	and information to the public;
82	82	Whereas Latinas are world-class athletes, representing the
83	83	United States in the Olympics and other international
84	84	competitions;
85	85	Whereas Latinas working full-time, year-round are paid just
86	86	58 cents for every dollar paid to White, non-Hispanic
87	87	men, and over a 40 year career, a Latina with a profes-
88	88	sional degree could lose more than $2,900,000 in wages;
89	89	Whereas, in the face of societal obstacles, including unequal
90	90	pay, disparities in education, health care needs, and civil
91	91	rights struggles, Latinas continue to break through and
92	92	thrive;
93	93	Whereas the United States should continue to invest in the
94	94	future of Latinas to address the barriers they face; and
95	95	Whereas, by 2060, the population of Latinas in the United
96	96	States is projected to be 48,834,000: Now, therefore, be
