55 Expressing support for the designation of the fourth Wednesday of February
66 as ‘‘Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day’’.
77 IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
88 APRIL8, 2025
99 Mr. L
1010 AHOODsubmitted the following resolution; which was referred to the
1111 Committee on Energy and Commerce
1212 RESOLUTION
1313 Expressing support for the designation of the fourth Wednes-
1414 day of February as ‘‘Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
1515 Awareness Day’’.
1616 Whereas hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (‘‘HCM’’) is a chronic
1717 cardiac disease involving thickening of the heart muscle
1818 and can potentially lead to debilitating symptoms and se-
1919 rious complications including heart failure, atrial fibrilla-
2020 tion, stroke, and in rare cases sudden cardiac death;
2121 Whereas HCM is the most common inheritable heart disease
2222 and can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or eth-
2323 nicity with a reported prevalence ranging from 1 in 200
2424 to 1 in 500 in the general population;
2525 Whereas an estimated 700,000 to 1,650,000 people in the
2626 United States have HCM, yet 85 percent of them may
2727 remain undiagnosed;

3131 Whereas HCM shares symptoms with other common cardio-
3232 vascular and pulmonary diseases, such as shortness of
3333 breath, chest pain, fatigue, palpitations, and fainting,
3434 making it difficult to distinguish HCM from these other
3535 diseases;
3636 Whereas, when untreated, all-cause mortality risk is 3 to 4
3737 times higher in patients with HCM than that of the gen-
3838 eral population;
3939 Whereas knowing one’s medical history and any signs and
4040 symptoms of HCM is an important first step in receiving
4141 an accurate diagnosis of HCM;
4242 Whereas a health care provider must conduct thorough
4343 screening with cardiac health questions to help identify a
4444 risk of cardiac disorders, both genetic and congenital;
4545 Whereas a health care provider may conduct several tests, in-
4646 cluding an echocardiogram, a cardiac MRI, or genetic
4747 testing to confirm a family history of HCM, and must ex-
4848 amine the heart to diagnose HCM;
4949 Whereas, following a diagnosis of HCM, it is important for
5050 patients to work with their health care provider to learn
5151 more about their disease and understand different man-
5252 agement options, including prescription medicines and
5353 surgical treatment options that may help; and
5454 Whereas ‘‘Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day’’ is
5555 expected to be observed in the United States for years to
5656 come, providing hope and information for patients, care-
5757 givers, and families around the country: Now, therefore,
