1515 Raising awareness of esophageal cancer by expressing sup-
1616 port for the designation of April 2025 as ‘‘Esophageal
1717 Cancer Awareness Month’’.
1818 Whereas esophageal cancer is the fastest increasing cancer
1919 among American men;
2020 Whereas esophageal cancer is 1 of the fastest growing cancer
2121 diagnoses among all Americans, increasing more than
2222 700 percent in recent decades;
2323 Whereas esophageal cancer kills 1 American every 36 minutes
2424 every day;
2525 Whereas esophageal cancer is among the deadliest of cancers,
2626 with only about 1 in 5 patients surviving 5 years;

3030 Whereas esophageal cancer has tripled in incidence among
3131 younger Americans in recent decades;
3232 Whereas esophageal cancer has low survival rates because it
3333 is usually discovered at advanced stages when treatment
3434 outcomes are poor;
3535 Whereas esophageal cancer in the United States is most often
3636 caused by persistent heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux
3737 disease (GERD), yet many who are at risk are unaware
3838 of the potential danger GERD can present when it occurs
3939 over several weeks or months;
4040 Whereas esophageal cancer can be a silent killer with patients
4141 often unaware that the heartburn, cough, hoarse voice,
4242 sore throat, chest pain, or other symptoms they suffer
4343 can be signs of GERD and are reasons to discuss screen-
4444 ing for esophageal cancer with their health care provider;
4545 Whereas esophageal cancer can develop from GERD when
4646 fluids from the stomach splash into the esophagus, cre-
4747 ating cellular change resulting in a precancerous condi-
4848 tion known as Barrett’s esophagus, which can lead to a
4949 30-fold increase in a patient’s risk of developing esopha-
5050 geal cancer;
5151 Whereas raising awareness about esophageal cancer empow-
5252 ers individuals to seek preventive care, recognize symp-
5353 toms, and pursue early detection strategies;
5454 Whereas survivors, caregivers, medical professionals, and re-
5555 searchers have made tremendous strides in advancing
5656 treatment options and improving the quality of life for
5757 those affected by the disease;
5858 Whereas designating April as ‘‘Esophageal Cancer Awareness
5959 Month’’ will encourage public education efforts, support

6363 ongoing research initiatives, and promote early screening
6464 and prevention strategies;
6565 Whereas esophageal cancer can be prevented through early
6666 detection of its precursor, Barrett’s esophagus, which can
6767 be eliminated with curative outpatient techniques; and
6868 Whereas research indicates that patients diagnosed with
6969 early-stage esophageal cancer have a significantly higher
7070 5-year survival rate of up to 49 percent compared to
7171 those diagnosed at later stages, underscoring the critical
7272 need for enhanced screening and awareness: Now, there-
7373 fore, be it
7474 Resolved, That the House of Representatives— 1
7575 (1) expresses support for the designation of 2
7676 ‘‘Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month’’; 3
7777 (2) encourages the Federal Government, States, 4
7878 localities, nonprofit organizations, and the media to 5
7979 promote awareness of esophageal cancer; 6
8080 (3) recognizes the importance of increased 7
8181 funding for research, improved treatment options, 8
8282 and the development of early detection methods for 9
8383 esophageal cancer; 10
8484 (4) encourages individuals to learn about risk 11
8585 factors and symptoms of esophageal cancer and to 12
8686 consult health care professionals regarding potential 13
8787 screening options; and 14
