43	43	Supporting the goals and ideals of Korean American Day.
44	44	Whereas the influence of Korean Americans may be observed
45	45	in all facets of American life, from politics to industry,
46	46	entrepreneurship to volunteerism, the arts, and edu-
47	47	cation;

51	51	Whereas, on January 13, 1903, 102 courageous Korean im-
52	52	migrants arrived in the United States initiating the first
53	53	large wave of Korean immigration to America;
54	54	Whereas these pioneer Korean immigrants faced tremendous
55	55	social and economic obstacles as well as language barriers
56	56	in America, the land of opportunity;
57	57	Whereas, in pursuit of the American dream, Korean immi-
58	58	grants initially served as farmworkers, wage laborers, and
59	59	section hands throughout the United States;
60	60	Whereas first generation Korean immigrants established a
61	61	new home in a new land through resilience, tenacious ef-
62	62	fort, and immense sacrifice, which became the bedrock
63	63	for their children and future generations of Korean
64	64	Americans;
65	65	Whereas the centennial year of 2003 marked an important
66	66	milestone in the history of Korean immigration;
67	67	Whereas the House passed House Resolution 487 to com-
68	68	memorate Korean American Day in the 109th Congress;
69	69	Whereas the Senate passed Senate Resolution 283 to com-
70	70	memorate Korean American Day in the 109th Congress;
71	71	Whereas Korean Americans, like other groups of immigrants
72	72	that came to the United States before them, seeking a
73	73	better life and opportunity, have thrived in their new
74	74	homeland due to a strong work ethic, family bonds, and
75	75	community spirit;
76	76	Whereas Korean Americans have made significant contribu-
77	77	tions to the economic vitality of the United States and
78	78	the global marketplace;

82	82	Whereas Korean Americans have made history by winning
83	83	elections throughout the country in local, State, and Fed-
84	84	eral levels of political office;
85	85	Whereas Korean Americans have invigorated businesses, not-
86	86	for-profit and other nongovernmental organizations, gov-
87	87	ernment, technology, medicine, athletics, arts and enter-
88	88	tainment, journalism, churches, academic communities,
89	89	and countless facets of American life;
90	90	Whereas Korean Americans have built and strengthened the
91	91	alliance between the United States and the Republic of
92	92	Korea, fostering peace on the Korean Peninsula;
93	93	Whereas Korean Americans have made enormous contribu-
94	94	tions to the military strength of the United States and
95	95	served with distinction in the Armed Forces during
96	96	World War I, World War II, the Vietnam war, the con-
97	97	flict in Korea, and subsequent military conflicts across
98	98	the globe; and
99	99	Whereas the Centennial Committees of Korean Immigration
100	100	and Korean Americans have designated January 13 of
101	101	each year as ‘‘Korean American Day’’ to commemorate
102	102	the first step of the long and prosperous journey of Ko-
103	103	rean Americans in the United States: Now, therefore, be
104	104	it
105	105	Resolved, That the House of Representatives— 1
106	106	(1) supports the goals and ideals of Korean 2
107	107	American Day; 3
108	108	(2) urges all Americans to observe Korean 4
109	109	American Day so as to have a greater appreciation 5
110	110	of the invaluable contributions Korean Americans 6
111	111	have made to the United States; and 7
