4343 Supporting the goals and ideals of Korean American Day.
4444 Whereas the influence of Korean Americans may be observed
4545 in all facets of American life, from politics to industry,
4646 entrepreneurship to volunteerism, the arts, and edu-
4747 cation;

5151 Whereas, on January 13, 1903, 102 courageous Korean im-
5252 migrants arrived in the United States initiating the first
5353 large wave of Korean immigration to America;
5454 Whereas these pioneer Korean immigrants faced tremendous
5555 social and economic obstacles as well as language barriers
5656 in America, the land of opportunity;
5757 Whereas, in pursuit of the American dream, Korean immi-
5858 grants initially served as farmworkers, wage laborers, and
5959 section hands throughout the United States;
6060 Whereas first generation Korean immigrants established a
6161 new home in a new land through resilience, tenacious ef-
6262 fort, and immense sacrifice, which became the bedrock
6363 for their children and future generations of Korean
6464 Americans;
6565 Whereas the centennial year of 2003 marked an important
6666 milestone in the history of Korean immigration;
6767 Whereas the House passed House Resolution 487 to com-
6868 memorate Korean American Day in the 109th Congress;
6969 Whereas the Senate passed Senate Resolution 283 to com-
7070 memorate Korean American Day in the 109th Congress;
7171 Whereas Korean Americans, like other groups of immigrants
7272 that came to the United States before them, seeking a
7373 better life and opportunity, have thrived in their new
7474 homeland due to a strong work ethic, family bonds, and
7575 community spirit;
7676 Whereas Korean Americans have made significant contribu-
7777 tions to the economic vitality of the United States and
7878 the global marketplace;

8282 Whereas Korean Americans have made history by winning
8383 elections throughout the country in local, State, and Fed-
8484 eral levels of political office;
8585 Whereas Korean Americans have invigorated businesses, not-
8686 for-profit and other nongovernmental organizations, gov-
8787 ernment, technology, medicine, athletics, arts and enter-
8888 tainment, journalism, churches, academic communities,
8989 and countless facets of American life;
9090 Whereas Korean Americans have built and strengthened the
9191 alliance between the United States and the Republic of
9292 Korea, fostering peace on the Korean Peninsula;
9393 Whereas Korean Americans have made enormous contribu-
9494 tions to the military strength of the United States and
9595 served with distinction in the Armed Forces during
9696 World War I, World War II, the Vietnam war, the con-
9797 flict in Korea, and subsequent military conflicts across
9898 the globe; and
9999 Whereas the Centennial Committees of Korean Immigration
100100 and Korean Americans have designated January 13 of
101101 each year as ‘‘Korean American Day’’ to commemorate
102102 the first step of the long and prosperous journey of Ko-
103103 rean Americans in the United States: Now, therefore, be
104104 it
105105 Resolved, That the House of Representatives— 1
106106 (1) supports the goals and ideals of Korean 2
107107 American Day; 3
108108 (2) urges all Americans to observe Korean 4
109109 American Day so as to have a greater appreciation 5
110110 of the invaluable contributions Korean Americans 6
111111 have made to the United States; and 7
