1616 Supporting the goals and ideals of San Jacinto Day in rec-
1717 ognition of April 21, 1836, the date on which General
1818 Sam Houston and the Texan Army defeated the Mexican
1919 Army winning Texas independence from Mexico.
2020 Whereas, 189 years ago, General Sam Houston launched an
2121 attack against Santa Anna and his Mexican Army achiev-
2222 ing the deciding victory over Mexico securing Texas inde-
2323 pendence;
2424 Whereas General Sam Houston said, ‘‘We must now act or
2525 abandon all hope. Rally to the standard and be no longer
2626 the scoff of mercenary tongues. Be men, be free men,
2727 that your children may bless their father’s name’’;

3131 Whereas the battle lasted only 18 minutes before the Texan
3232 Army claimed their victory;
3333 Whereas the victory at San Jacinto led to the independence
3434 of Texas from Mexico, giving Texas the autonomy needed
3535 for its eventual admission into the United States nine
3636 years later; and
3737 Whereas the legacy of the Texan Army, remembered for its
3838 courage and sacrifice continues to inspire national pride
3939 in Texans and Americans alike: Now therefore be it
4040 Resolved, That the House of Representatives— 1
4141 (1) supports the goals and ideals of San Jacinto 2
4242 Day, marking the 189th anniversary of the Battle of 3
4343 San Jacinto, the day outnumbered Texan soldiers 4
4444 defeated the Mexican Army and solidified Texas 5
4545 independence; 6
4646 (2) honors the bravery and honor of those who 7
4747 fought in the Texas revolution for their commitment 8
4848 to freedom and liberty; and 9
4949 (3) encourages all Americans to reflect on the 10
5050 importance of freedom and the spirit of those who 11
5151 fight to uphold freedom and American ideals. 12
