1414 Supporting the goals and ideals of Mathematics and
1515 Statistics Awareness Month.
1616 Whereas mathematical and statistical research is ongoing, re-
1717 vealing new results and applications every day in fields
1818 such as medicine, cybersecurity, manufacturing, artificial
1919 intelligence, energy, biotechnology, and business;
2020 Whereas mathematics and statistics are important drivers of
2121 innovation in our technical world;
2222 Whereas education in the mathematical and statistical
2323 sciences is foundational and serves as a connecting fabric
2424 for all advances in science and engineering;
2525 Whereas science and engineering are becoming increasingly
2626 computational and data-based, extending the need for

3232 Whereas advances in mathematical and statistical sciences
3333 enable understanding of complex systems and design of
3434 new technology, with implications for societal challenges
3535 in health, defense, energy, transportation, and other
3636 areas;
3737 Whereas Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month began
3838 in 1986 as Mathematics Awareness Week with a procla-
3939 mation by President Ronald Reagan;
4040 Whereas Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month is now
4141 held each year in April with the goal to increase public
4242 understanding of and appreciation for the mathematical
4343 and statistical sciences;
4444 Whereas participation by United States women, Blacks or Af-
4545 rican Americans, American Indians or Alaska natives,
4646 and Hispanics or Latinos, as percentages of PhD recipi-
4747 ents in the mathematical sciences have persistently been
4848 out of step with national demographics of 29 percent, 1.2
4949 percent, 0 percent, and 2.8 percent, respectively, in 2022,
5050 as reported by the National Center for Science and Engi-
5151 neering Statistics;
5252 Whereas the sponsors of Mathematics and Statistics Aware-
5353 ness Month are working together to transform the mathe-
5454 matical and statistical sciences workforce through greater
5555 inclusion of women and underrepresented minorities;
5656 Whereas a more diverse mathematical sciences workforce
5757 would enhance the mathematical sciences and also ad-
5858 vance the national security and economic interests of the
5959 country;

6363 Whereas the sponsors of Mathematics and Statistics Aware-
6464 ness Month are working together to maintain the United
6565 States global preeminence in the mathematics and statis-
6666 tics;
6767 Whereas engaging young students, parents, and educators in
6868 hands-on activities inspires future generations of talent in
6969 the mathematical and statistical sciences;
7070 Whereas Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month activi-
7171 ties are organized across the country by college and uni-
7272 versity departments, institutional public information of-
7373 fices, student groups, and related associations and inter-
7474 est groups, and include a wide variety of workshops, com-
7575 petitions, exhibits, festivals, lectures, and symposia; and
7676 Whereas April is designated as Mathematics and Statistics
7777 Awareness Month to celebrate mathematics and statistics
7878 and the diverse researchers and students in these fields
7979 who are contributing so much to furthering discoveries
8080 and solving global problems: Now, therefore, be it
8181 Resolved, That the House of Representatives— 1
8282 (1) supports the goals and ideals of Mathe-2
8383 matics and Statistics Awareness Month to increase 3
8484 the visibility of mathematics and statistics as fields 4
8585 of study and to communicate the myriad benefits of 5
8686 education in mathematics and statistics; 6
8787 (2) recognizes that mathematics and statistics 7
8888 underpin all of the STEM disciplines (science, tech-8
8989 nology, engineering, and mathematics), which are 9
9090 critical to the United States education system and 10
9191 economic prosperity; and 11
