18	18	Recognizing the 112th Anniversary of Delta Sigma Theta
19	19	Sorority, Incorporated.
20	20	Whereas Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, was
21	21	founded on January 13, 1913, by 22 college women at
22	22	Howard University;
23	23	Whereas the founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incor-
24	24	porated, include Osceola Macarthy Adams, Marguerite
25	25	Young Alexander, Winona Cargile Alexander, Ethel Cuff
26	26	Black, Bertha Pitts Campbell, Zephyr Chisom Carter,
27	27	Edna Brown Coleman, Jessie McGuire Dent, Frederica
28	28	Chase Dodd, Myra Davis Hemmings, Olive Jones,
29	29	Jimmie Bugg Middleton, Pauline Oberdorfer Minor,

38	38	vate, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide
39	39	assistance and support through established programs in
40	40	local communities throughout the world;
41	41	Whereas Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, is the
42	42	largest African-American Greek letter sorority, a sister-
43	43	hood of more than 350,000 predominately African-Amer-
44	44	ican college-educated women, comprised of over 1,050
45	45	chapters located throughout the United States, the con-
46	46	tinent of Africa, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Canada, Ger-
47	47	many, Jamaica, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), the United
48	48	Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the Virgin Islands,
49	49	and the Republic of Korea;
50	50	Whereas Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, has a
51	51	legacy of exercising its collective strength to promote aca-
52	52	demic excellence and to provide assistance to persons in
53	53	need;
54	54	Whereas Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, uses its
55	55	Five-Point Program Thrust of Economic Development,
56	56	Educational Development, International Awareness and
57	57	Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political
58	58	Awareness and Involvement to uplift, encourage, and de-
59	59	velop the global community;
60	60	Whereas Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, has dem-
61	61	onstrated a steadfast commitment to service by imple-
62	62	menting and sustaining programs such as those through
63	63	the Financial Fortitude initiative, which seek to close the
64	64	widening gap via personal financial planning initiatives,

69	69	lished Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy, which provides
70	70	opportunities for local chapters to enrich and enhance the
71	71	education that young women receive in public schools
72	72	across the Nation to prepare them for full participation
73	73	as leaders in the 21st Century;
74	74	Whereas Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, has dem-
75	75	onstrated a steadfast global commitment to service by es-
76	76	tablishing and maintaining the Mary Help of the Sick
77	77	Mission Hospital in Thika, Kenya, and as evidenced by
78	78	its designation a non-governmental organization to the
79	79	Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and
80	80	its promotion to special consultative status, as a result of
81	81	its volunteer services and humanitarian efforts performed
82	82	to address issues throughout the world;
83	83	Whereas Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, has re-
84	84	mained an active and committed participant in the demo-
85	85	cratic process by instituting its annual Delta Days at the
86	86	United Nations and Delta Days in the Nation’s Capital;
87	87	Whereas the current members of Delta Sigma Theta Soror-
88	88	ity, Incorporated, stand on the shoulders of giants, such
89	89	as Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, Congresswoman
90	90	Barbara Jordan, Secretary Marcia Fudge, Senator Carol
91	91	Moseley Braun, Congresswoman Carrie P. Meek, Con-
92	92	gresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones, Dr. Dorothy I.
93	93	Height, and the Honorable Patricia Roberts Harris to
94	94	name a few, who have left an incredible imprint on the
95	95	Nation’s history; and
96	96	Whereas Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated, continues to make
97	97	a difference in American and international communities,
98	98	always following in the footsteps of its Founders and up-
