Congratulating Gregg Popovich, former Head Coach of the San Antonio 
Spurs and the winningest head coach in National Basketball Association 
history, on his retirement.

referred to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform 
RESOLUTION 
Congratulating Gregg Popovich, former Head Coach of the 
San Antonio Spurs and the winningest head coach in 
National Basketball Association history, on his retire-
ment. 
Whereas, on May 2, 2025, Coach Popovich retired from his 
legendary career with the San Antonio Spurs, a franchise 
he helped lead and transform since joining in 1988; 
Whereas, following a prior stint as an assistant coach with 
the Spurs, Coach Popovich returned to the organization 
as General Manager and Vice President of Basketball 
Operations in 1994, and in 1996, assumed the role of 
Head Coach—a position he held for 29 seasons;

Whereas Coach Popovich holds the record for the most wins 
of any head coach in National Basketball Association 
(NBA) history; 
Whereas, during Coach Popovich’s tenure, he led the Spurs 
to five NBA championships in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 
and 2014, and six Western Conference championships in 
1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2013, and 2014; 
Whereas Coach Popovich was named NBA Coach of the Year 
three times, in 2003, 2012, and 2014, and served as the 
NBA All-Star Game Head Coach four times, in 2005, 
2011, 2013, and 2016; 
Whereas Coach Popovich led the United States Men’s Olym-
pic Basketball Team to a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo 
Olympics; 
Whereas, in 2023, Coach Popovich was inducted into the 
Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in recogni-
tion of his unparalleled contributions to the game; 
Whereas prior to Coach Popovich’s coaching career, he grad-
uated from the United States Air Force Academy and 
served five years of active duty in the United States Air 
Force, including a tour through Eastern Europe and the 
Soviet Union with the United States Armed Forces Bas-
ketball Team; and 
Whereas Coach Popovich stated, ‘‘I’m forever grateful to the 
wonderful players, coaches, staff and fans who allowed 
me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and am ex-
cited for the opportunity to continue to support the orga-
nization, community and city that are so meaningful to 
me’’: Now, therefore, be it

(1) commends Gregg Popovich for his historic 1
and record-setting career in the National Basketball 2
Association, including five NBA championships and 3
the most coaching wins in league history; 4
(2) recognizes his lasting contributions not only 5
to the San Antonio Spurs organization but also to 6
the broader San Antonio community and the sport 7
of basketball; 8
(3) congratulates Coach Popovich on his retire-9
ment and extends best wishes for continued success; 10
and 11
(4) directs the Clerk of the House of Represent-12
atives to transmit an enrolled copy of this resolution 13
to Gregg Popovich, President of Basketball Oper-14
ations, San Antonio Spurs. 15
