1515 Expressing support for the recognition of January as ‘‘Mus-
1616 lim-American Heritage Month’’ and celebrating the herit-
1717 age and culture of Muslim Americans in the United
1818 States.
1919 Whereas the House of Representatives is proud to recognize
2020 and commemorate ‘‘Muslim-American Heritage Month’’,
2121 an observance that celebrates the contributions of Muslim
2222 Americans;
2323 Whereas, in keeping with its time-honored traditions, the
2424 House of Representatives recognizes and pays tribute to
2525 those who foster cultural pride and enhance the profile
2626 of diverse communities across the United States;

3030 Whereas immigration of Muslims to the American colonies
3131 began with the arrival of indentured workers;
3232 Whereas, during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, a signifi-
3333 cant number of slaves of Muslim heritage were brought
3434 to the United States;
3535 Whereas, in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, successive
3636 waves of immigration brought additional Muslims to the
3737 United States, who sought to pursue economic and social
3838 opportunity, as well as freedom of religion, and enriched
3939 the fabric of the society of the United States as business
4040 owners, entrepreneurs, health care professionals, humani-
4141 tarians, scientists, and students;
4242 Whereas Muslim Americans contribute greatly to charitable
4343 organizations that help people from all faiths in the
4444 United States and around the world by providing medical
4545 assistance, family services, and scholastic supplies, run-
4646 ning before- and after-school programs, feeding the hun-
4747 gry, and providing recuperation efforts following natural
4848 disasters;
4949 Whereas Muslim Americans have contributed to every part of
5050 the society of the United States by making advancements
5151 in architecture, arts, business, culture, government, law,
5252 medicine, the military, religion, and sports;
5353 Whereas Bangladeshi-American Fazlur Rahman Khan left his
5454 mark on the cityscapes of the United States by pio-
5555 neering a new structural system of frame tubes used to
5656 construct iconic buildings like the World Trade Center in
5757 New York City, New York, the Hubert H. Humphrey
5858 Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the Willis
5959 ‘‘Sears’’ Tower in Chicago, Illinois;

6565 States as business owners and entrepreneurs, including
6666 Pakistani-born billionaire Shahid Khan, owner of the
6767 auto-parts company Flex-N-Gate and the National Foot-
6868 ball League’s Jacksonville Jaguars;
6969 Whereas Syrian immigrant Ernest Hamwi’s invention of the
7070 ice cream cone is a practical confection with a near ubiq-
7171 uitous presence in the life of the people of the United
7272 States;
7373 Whereas, in 2006, Keith Ellison of Minnesota was elected to
7474 the House of Representatives, becoming the first Muslim
7575 American to serve in Congress;
7676 Whereas, in 2008, Ambassador Sada Cumber was appointed
7777 by President George W. Bush to serve as the first Special
7878 Envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference
7979 from the United States, representing the United States
8080 to 57 Muslim-majority nations;
8181 Whereas, in 2015, Andre´Carson of Indiana, the second Mus-
8282 lim American elected to the House of Representatives,
8383 became the first Muslim American to serve on the House
8484 Select Committee on Intelligence;
8585 Whereas actor Mahershala Ali became the first Muslim
8686 American to win an Oscar for his supporting role in
8787 ‘‘Moonlight’’ in 2017;
8888 Whereas, in 2018, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ilhan
8989 Omar of Minnesota were elected to the House of Rep-
9090 resentatives, becoming the first Muslim-American women
9191 to serve in Congress;
9292 Whereas, in 2021, Zahid Quraishi was confirmed as the first
9393 Muslim American to serve as an article III Federal judge

107107 Muhamed and Yusuf Ben Ali under the command of
108108 General George Washington in the American Revolu-
109109 tionary War, to Captain Humayun Khan, who made the
110110 ultimate sacrifice in Iraq in 2004;
111111 Whereas Imam Warith Deen Mohammed, the first Muslim
112112 American to deliver the invocation for the Senate, and
113113 El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, the civil rights activist and re-
114114 former also known as Malcolm X, were prominent reli-
115115 gious leaders and scholars;
116116 Whereas Muslim-American professional athletes like Naismith
117117 Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame members Kareem
118118 Abdul Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Shaquille O’Neal
119119 and 2-time world heavyweight champion Hasim Shariff
120120 Rahman thrilled sports fans across the United States and
121121 around the globe during their respective careers;
122122 Whereas Muslim-American Olympians, such as boxer Mu-
123123 hammad Ali, track and field athlete Dalilah Muhammad,
124124 and fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, won medals in inter-
125125 national competitions;

129129 Whereas, with roots in at least 77 different countries and
130130 identifying racially as White, Black, Arab, and Asian,
131131 Muslim Americans are an extremely diverse population;
132132 Whereas the current population of Muslims living in the
133133 United States is estimated at over 3,450,000 individuals;
134134 Whereas over 4,500 Muslims serve on active duty, and over
135135 2,300 Muslims serve as selected reserve personnel in the
136136 Armed Forces;
137137 Whereas the Muslim population has been growing in the
138138 United States, and today’s Muslim-American population
139139 is a tapestry of ethnic, racial, linguistic, social, and eco-
140140 nomic groups;
141141 Whereas nearly 50 percent of Muslim Americans have re-
142142 ported experiencing religious discrimination, with that
143143 number rising to 64 percent for Muslim Americans whose
144144 appearance identifies them as Muslim, such as women
145145 who wear the hijab or headscarf;
146146 Whereas there is a need for public education, awareness, and
147147 policies that help people be culturally competent when de-
148148 scribing, discussing, or addressing the impacts that Mus-
149149 lim Americans have on all aspects of the society of the
150150 United States;
151151 Whereas ‘‘Muslim-American Heritage Month’’ will be ob-
152152 served in the month of January; and
153153 Whereas the incredible contributions and heritage of Muslim
154154 Americans have helped to build a better United States:
155155 Now, therefore, be it
156156 Resolved, That the House of Representatives— 1
157157 (1) supports the designation of ‘‘Muslim-Amer-2
158158 ican Heritage Month’’; 3
