3636 Recognizing the cultural and historical significance of Lunar

3838 Whereas Lunar New Year begins on the second new moon
3939 following the winter solstice, or the first day of the new
4040 year according to the lunisolar calendar, and extends
4141 until the full moon 15 days later;

4646 lunisolar calendar, is called the Lantern Festival;
4747 Whereas Lunar New Year is often referred to as Spring Fes-
4848 tival in various Asian countries;
4949 Whereas many religious and ethnic communities use lunar-
5050 based calendars;
5151 Whereas Lunar New Year began in China more than 4,000
5252 years ago and is widely celebrated in East and Southeast
5353 Asia;
5454 Whereas Lunar New Year is recognized as Seollal among Ko-
5555 reans and Tt among Vietnamese;
5656 Whereas the Asian diaspora has expanded the Lunar New
5757 Year celebration into an annual worldwide event;
5858 Whereas Lunar New Year is celebrated by millions of Asian
5959 Americans, and by many non-Asian Americans, in the
6060 United States;
6161 Whereas Lunar New Year is celebrated with community ac-
6262 tivities and cultural performances;
6363 Whereas participants celebrating Lunar New Year travel to
6464 spend the holiday reuniting with family and friends; and
6565 Whereas Lunar New Year is traditionally a time to wish
6666 upon others good fortune, health, prosperity, and happi-
6767 ness: Now, therefore, be it
6868 Resolved, That the House of Representatives— 1
6969 (1) recognizes the cultural and historical signifi-2
7070 cance of Lunar New Year; 3
7171 (2) in observance of this Lunar New Year, the 4
7272 Year of the Snake, expresses its deepest respect for 5
