2929 (1) IN GENERAL.—The Secretary of Agri-1
3030 culture, acting through the Administrator of the Ag-2
3131 ricultural Research Service, shall— 3
3232 (A) conduct research— 4
3333 (i) to identify the compounds respon-5
3434 sible for smoke taint; and 6
3535 (ii) to establish standard methodolo-7
3636 gies for sampling and testing smoke-ex-8
3737 posed wine grapes and smoke-affected 9
3838 wines, including fast and inexpensive 10
3939 screening methods; 11
4040 (B) establish a reliable database of back-12
4141 ground levels of smoke taint compounds that 13
4242 occur naturally in wine grapes; 14
4343 (C) develop risk assessment tools or miti-15
4444 gation methods to reduce or eliminate smoke 16
4545 taint; and 17
4646 (D) study compounds that can act as a 18
4747 barrier between wine grapes and smoke com-19
4848 pounds. 20

5050 OORDINATION.—The Secretary of Agri-21
5151 culture, acting through the Administrator of the Ag-22
5252 ricultural Research Service, shall carry out para-23
5353 graph (1) in coordination with land-grant colleges 24
5454 and universities (as defined in section 1404 of the 25
