3131 (a) I
3232 NGENERAL.—The Secretary of Veterans Affairs 5
3333 shall enter into an agreement with the National Academies 6
3434 of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (in this section re-7
3535 ferred to as the ‘‘National Academies’’), under which the 8
3636 National Academies shall conduct a study on the preva-9
3737 lence and mortality of cancers among covered individuals. 10
3838 (b) S
3939 TUDY.—The study required under subsection (a) 11
4040 shall— 12
4141 (1) identify exposures associated with military 13
4242 occupations of covered individuals, including relating 14
4343 to chemicals, compounds, agents, and other phe-15
4444 nomena; 16
4545 (2) review the literature to determine associa-17
4646 tions between exposures referred to in paragraph (1) 18
4747 and the incidence or prevalence of overall cancer 19
4848 morbidity, overall cancer mortality, and increased in-20
4949 cidence or prevalence of— 21
5050 (A) brain cancer; 22
5151 (B) colon and rectal cancers; 23
5252 (C) kidney cancer; 24
5353 (D) lung cancer; 25
5454 (E) melanoma skin cancer; 26

5959 (G) pancreatic cancer; 2
6060 (H) prostate cancer; 3
6161 (I) testicular cancer; 4
6262 (J) thyroid cancer; 5
6363 (K) urinary bladder cancer; and 6
6464 (L) other cancers as determined appro-7
6565 priate by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, in 8
6666 consultation with the National Academies; and 9
6767 (3) determine, to the extent possible, the preva-10
6868 lence of and mortality from the cancers specified in 11
6969 paragraph (2) among covered individuals by using 12
7070 available sources of data, which may include— 13
7171 (A) health care and other administrative 14
7272 databases of the Department of Veterans Af-15
7373 fairs, the Department of Defense, and the indi-16
7474 vidual Services, respectively; 17
7575 (B) the national death index maintained by 18
7676 the National Center for Health Statistics of the 19
7777 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; 20
7878 and 21
7979 (C) the study conducted under section 750 22
8080 of the William M. (Mac) Thornberry National 23
8181 Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021 24
8282 (Public Law 116–283; 134 Stat. 3716). 25

8686 (c) REPORT.—At the conclusion of the study required 1
8787 under subsection (a), the National Academies shall submit 2
8888 to the Secretary and to the Committee on Veterans’ Af-3
8989 fairs of the Senate and the Committee on Veterans’ Af-4
9090 fairs of the House of Representatives a report containing 5
9191 the results of the study described in subsection (b). 6

9393 OVEREDINDIVIDUALDEFINED.—In this sec-7
9494 tion, the term ‘‘covered individual’’ means an individual 8
9595 who served on active duty in the Army, Navy, Air Force, 9
9696 or Marine Corps as an aircrew member of a fixed-wing 10
9797 aircraft, including as a pilot, navigator, weapons systems 11
9898 operator, aircraft system operator, or any other crew 12
9999 member who regularly flew in a fixed-wing aircraft. 13
