12	12	resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Armed Services
13	13	RESOLUTION
14	14	Honoring the 108th anniversary of Selfridge Air National
15	15	Guard Base and the contributions of Selfridge Air Na-
16	16	tional Guard Base to the Armed Forces and national
17	17	security of the United States.
18	18	Whereas Selfridge Air National Guard Base is named after
19	19	Army 1st Lieutenant Thomas E. Selfridge, the first aer-
20	20	ial military casualty during a demonstration flight with
21	21	Orville Wright in 1908;
22	22	Whereas the Army commissioned Selfridge Field in Harrison
23	23	Township, Michigan, on July 1, 1917, and it is one of
24	24	the oldest military airfields in the United States still in
25	25	use;
26	26	Whereas the 332d Fighter Group of the famed Tuskegee Air-
27	27	men, an all-African-American unit, moved to Selfridge

31	31	Field on March 29, 1943, and Colonel Benjamin O.
32	32	Davis became the first African-American commander on
33	33	October 8, 1943;
34	34	Whereas, on July 1, 1971, Selfridge Field was transferred to
35	35	the Michigan Air National Guard, becoming the first
36	36	major Air Force installation under the jurisdiction of the
37	37	Michigan Air National Guard;
38	38	Whereas, on April 1, 1996, the 127th Wing of the Michigan
39	39	Air National Guard was established at Selfridge Air Na-
40	40	tional Guard Base;
41	41	Whereas, after the terrorist attacks on the United States on
42	42	September 11, 2001, Selfridge Air National Guard Base
43	43	became a key center for security operations to protect
44	44	and secure the northern border of the United States;
45	45	Whereas the 127th Wing of the Michigan Air National Guard
46	46	was the 2016 recipient of the Carl A. Spaatz Award, a
47	47	prestigious award given to the best flying organization in
48	48	the Air National Guard, and was awarded the Meri-
49	49	torious Unit Award in the same year for ‘‘outstanding
50	50	devotion and exceptional performance’’;
51	51	Whereas opportunities for investment in aerospace, as well as
52	52	more fighter missions, will keep Selfridge Air National
53	53	Guard Base successful and will contribute to a dominant
54	54	Air Force and to a strong national defense;
55	55	Whereas annual joint service and international Northern
56	56	Strike exercises, combined with the critical manufac-
57	57	turing base of the ‘‘Arsenal of Democracy’’, position the
58	58	State of Michigan as an invaluable cornerstone of na-
59	59	tional defense and aerospace;
60	60	Whereas the State of Michigan is home to the ‘‘Arsenal of
61	61	Democracy’’ along with the United States Army Tank-

68	68	Whereas Selfridge Air National Guard Base finds itself sur-
69	69	rounded by premier institutions of higher education and
70	70	with ample space and resources to become a hub of de-
71	71	fense and aerospace research and innovation;
72	72	Whereas the resolute support of residents of Macomb County,
73	73	Michigan, and elected officials of the State of Michigan
74	74	has resulted in continued investment and resources from
75	75	the Federal Government for Selfridge Air National Guard
76	76	Base and the defense industry in the State of Michigan;
77	77	Whereas Selfridge Air National Guard Base is a source of
78	78	community pride and enjoys unparalleled community sup-
79	79	port;
80	80	Whereas Selfridge Air National Guard Base generates hun-
81	81	dreds of millions of dollars to the surrounding cities and
82	82	townships of the State of Michigan and supports over
83	83	4,500 jobs;
84	84	Whereas Selfridge Air National Guard Base is a joint mili-
85	85	tary installation and home to many national security as-
86	86	sets of the United States, including assets of the Army,
87	87	Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard;
88	88	Whereas, on January 12, 2024, Selfridge Air National Guard
89	89	Base was selected by the United States Air Force for a
90	90	beddown of 12 KC–46A Pegasus tanker aircraft; and
91	91	Whereas Selfridge Air National Guard Base provides a stra-
92	92	tegic location for northern border security and homeland
93	93	defense in response to any threats coming from the north
94	94	through Canada and the Great Lakes region: Now, there-
