1313 Supporting the goals and ideals of Korean American Day.
1414 Whereas the influence of Korean Americans may be observed
1515 in all facets of life in the United States, from politics to
1616 industry, entrepreneurship to volunteerism, the arts, and
1717 education;
1818 Whereas, on January 13, 1903, 102 courageous Korean im-
1919 migrants arrived in the United States initiating the first
2020 large wave of Korean immigration to the United States;
2121 Whereas these pioneer Korean immigrants faced tremendous
2222 social and economic obstacles and language barriers in
2323 the United States, the land of opportunity;
2424 Whereas, in pursuit of the American dream, Korean immi-
2525 grants initially served as farmworkers, wage laborers, and
2626 section hands throughout the United States;

3030 Whereas first generation Korean immigrants established a
3131 new home in a new land through resilience, tenacious ef-
3232 fort, and immense sacrifice, which became the bedrock
3333 for their children and future generations of Korean
3434 Americans;
3535 Whereas the centennial year of 2003 marked an important
3636 milestone in the history of Korean immigration;
3737 Whereas the House of Representatives passed House Resolu-
3838 tion 487, 109th Congress, agreed to December 13, 2005,
3939 to commemorate Korean American Day;
4040 Whereas the Senate passed Senate Resolution 283, 109th
4141 Congress, agreed to December 16, 2005, to commemorate
4242 Korean American Day;
4343 Whereas Korean Americans, like other groups of immigrants
4444 that came to the United States before them, seeking a
4545 better life and opportunity, have thrived in their new
4646 homeland due to a strong work ethic, family bonds, and
4747 community spirit;
4848 Whereas Korean Americans have made significant contribu-
4949 tions to the economic vitality of the United States and
5050 the global marketplace;
5151 Whereas Korean Americans have made history by winning
5252 elections throughout the country in local, State, and Fed-
5353 eral levels of political office;
5454 Whereas Korean Americans have invigorated businesses, not-
5555 for-profit and other nongovernmental organizations, gov-
5656 ernment, technology, medicine, athletics, arts and enter-
5757 tainment, journalism, churches, academic communities,
5858 and countless facets of life in the United States;

6262 Whereas Korean Americans have built and strengthened the
6363 alliance between the United States and the Republic of
6464 Korea, fostering peace on the Korean Peninsula;
6565 Whereas Korean Americans have made enormous contribu-
6666 tions to the military strength of the United States and
6767 served with distinction in the Armed Forces during
6868 World War I, World War II, the Vietnam war, the con-
6969 flict in Korea, and subsequent military conflicts across
7070 the globe; and
7171 Whereas the Centennial Committees of Korean Immigration
7272 and Korean Americans have designated January 13 of
7373 each year as ‘‘Korean American Day’’ to commemorate
7474 the first step of the long and prosperous journey of Ko-
7575 rean Americans in the United States: Now, therefore, be
7676 it
7777 Resolved, That the Senate— 1
7878 (1) supports the goals and ideals of Korean 2
7979 American Day; 3
8080 (2) urges all individuals in the United States to 4
8181 observe Korean American Day so as to have a great-5
8282 er appreciation of the invaluable contributions Ko-6
8383 rean Americans have made to the United States; 7
8484 and 8
8585 (3) honors and recognizes the 122nd anniver-9
8686 sary of the arrival of the first Korean immigrants to 10
8787 the United States. 11
