10	10	MER, and Mr. SCHATZ) submitted the following resolution; which was re-
11	11	ferred to the Committee on the Judiciary
12	12	RESOLUTION
13	13	Supporting the goals and ideals of Korean American Day.
14	14	Whereas the influence of Korean Americans may be observed
15	15	in all facets of life in the United States, from politics to
16	16	industry, entrepreneurship to volunteerism, the arts, and
17	17	education;
18	18	Whereas, on January 13, 1903, 102 courageous Korean im-
19	19	migrants arrived in the United States initiating the first
20	20	large wave of Korean immigration to the United States;
21	21	Whereas these pioneer Korean immigrants faced tremendous
22	22	social and economic obstacles and language barriers in
23	23	the United States, the land of opportunity;
24	24	Whereas, in pursuit of the American dream, Korean immi-
25	25	grants initially served as farmworkers, wage laborers, and
26	26	section hands throughout the United States;

30	30	Whereas first generation Korean immigrants established a
31	31	new home in a new land through resilience, tenacious ef-
32	32	fort, and immense sacrifice, which became the bedrock
33	33	for their children and future generations of Korean
34	34	Americans;
35	35	Whereas the centennial year of 2003 marked an important
36	36	milestone in the history of Korean immigration;
37	37	Whereas the House of Representatives passed House Resolu-
38	38	tion 487, 109th Congress, agreed to December 13, 2005,
39	39	to commemorate Korean American Day;
40	40	Whereas the Senate passed Senate Resolution 283, 109th
41	41	Congress, agreed to December 16, 2005, to commemorate
42	42	Korean American Day;
43	43	Whereas Korean Americans, like other groups of immigrants
44	44	that came to the United States before them, seeking a
45	45	better life and opportunity, have thrived in their new
46	46	homeland due to a strong work ethic, family bonds, and
47	47	community spirit;
48	48	Whereas Korean Americans have made significant contribu-
49	49	tions to the economic vitality of the United States and
50	50	the global marketplace;
51	51	Whereas Korean Americans have made history by winning
52	52	elections throughout the country in local, State, and Fed-
53	53	eral levels of political office;
54	54	Whereas Korean Americans have invigorated businesses, not-
55	55	for-profit and other nongovernmental organizations, gov-
56	56	ernment, technology, medicine, athletics, arts and enter-
57	57	tainment, journalism, churches, academic communities,
58	58	and countless facets of life in the United States;

62	62	Whereas Korean Americans have built and strengthened the
63	63	alliance between the United States and the Republic of
64	64	Korea, fostering peace on the Korean Peninsula;
65	65	Whereas Korean Americans have made enormous contribu-
66	66	tions to the military strength of the United States and
67	67	served with distinction in the Armed Forces during
68	68	World War I, World War II, the Vietnam war, the con-
69	69	flict in Korea, and subsequent military conflicts across
70	70	the globe; and
71	71	Whereas the Centennial Committees of Korean Immigration
72	72	and Korean Americans have designated January 13 of
73	73	each year as ‘‘Korean American Day’’ to commemorate
74	74	the first step of the long and prosperous journey of Ko-
75	75	rean Americans in the United States: Now, therefore, be
76	76	it
77	77	Resolved, That the Senate— 1
78	78	(1) supports the goals and ideals of Korean 2
79	79	American Day; 3
80	80	(2) urges all individuals in the United States to 4
81	81	observe Korean American Day so as to have a great-5
82	82	er appreciation of the invaluable contributions Ko-6
83	83	rean Americans have made to the United States; 7
84	84	and 8
85	85	(3) honors and recognizes the 122nd anniver-9
86	86	sary of the arrival of the first Korean immigrants to 10
87	87	the United States. 11
