2025 SESSION ENROLLED HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 431 Commending the Blacksburg High School girls' track and field team. Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 20, 2025 Agreed to by the Senate, January 23, 2025 WHEREAS, on June 1, 2024, the Blacksburg High School girls' track and field team won the Virginia High School League Class 4 state championship in dramatic fashion, securing a lead in the team standings with its performance in the final event of the meet; and WHEREAS, the Blacksburg High School Bruins finished the meet with a total of 74 points, defeating the runner-up Atlee High School Raiders by only a half-point; and WHEREAS, the Blacksburg Bruins benefited from a deep roster of talented student-athletes, including Layla Boyle, who took first place in pole vault, and Mia Littlejohn, who placed second in high jump and broke a school record with her third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles; and WHEREAS, Kionna Grubb of the Blacksburg Bruins added another first-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.902, winning by only four-thousandths of a second; and WHEREAS, the Blacksburg Bruins also earned a second-place finish in the 4x800-meter relay, with contributions from Cameron Lee, Allie McDonald, Penny Griggs, and Tess Dickhans; and WHEREAS, the state championship meet came down to the final event, the 4x400-meter relay, where Mirra Bowman, Tess Dickhans, Allie McDonald, and Cameron Lee locked up a critical third-place finish to pull ahead in the team standings; and WHEREAS, the Blacksburg Bruins' 4x400-meter relay team finished with a school record time of 3:58.64, more than eight seconds faster than the team's previous time that earned it the number two seed in the event; and WHEREAS, the victory is a tribute to the skill and determination of all the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of coaches and staff, and the passionate support of family members, friends, and the entire Blacksburg High School community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Blacksburg High School girls' track and field team on winning the Virginia High School League Class 4 state championship; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Stephen Howard, head coach of the Blacksburg High School girls' track and field team, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the team's outstanding athletic achievements.
