2025 SESSION ENROLLED HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 547 Commending the organizers of Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission events in Historic Yorktown. Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 3, 2025 Agreed to by the Senate, February 6, 2025 WHEREAS, the General Assembly established the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission in 2020 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the Revolutionary War, and the formation of the United States as an independent nation; and WHEREAS, in July 2024, the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, the VA250 Yorktown Commemoration Committee, the Williamsburg-Yorktown American Revolution Round Table, and other local partners hosted a series of events to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the York County Resolves; and WHEREAS, the York County Resolves were developed in response to the Coercive Acts, better known as the Intolerable Acts, passed by British Parliament in early 1774 to reassert its dominance over the colonies after the Boston Tea Party, and similar measures were adopted in counties across Virginia; and WHEREAS, as part of the commemoration, historian Jim Gallagher portrayed Thomas Nelson, Jr., and gave a speech at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown encouraging citizens to protest the British crown's oppressive policies and taxation measures; and WHEREAS, in addition, the VA250 Yorktown Commemoration Committee and the Williamsburg-Yorktown American Revolution Round Table hosted a discussion about the history and significance of the York County Resolves; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the organizers of Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission events in Historic Yorktown for their work to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the York County Resolves; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the organizers of Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission events in Historic Yorktown as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for their efforts to raise awareness of the York County Resolves and educate the public about the foundation of the United States.
