1519 WHEREAS, for 50 years, the Council of Virginia Archaeologists has been the Commonwealth's professional archaeology organization dedicated to the preservation and study of fragile and non-renewable archaeological resources; and

1721 WHEREAS, founded in 1975, the mission of the Council of Virginia Archaeologists has been to promote the preservation and study of Virginia's pre-contact and historic archaeological resources; foster public awareness, knowledge, and support for the preservation of these archaeological resources; facilitate interactions between professional and avocational archaeologists; and act as an independent professional advisory group for the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR); and

1923 WHEREAS, the Council of Virginia Archaeologists supports the scientific and humanistic study of the human past, the preservation of archaeological sites and collections, and the dissemination of archaeological information for the benefit of the public; and

2125 WHEREAS, the members of the Council of Virginia Archaeologists strive to uphold the highest standards of performance and ethical practices in archaeology and ensure that investigations occur within a research framework under the oversight of professionally trained archaeologists; and

2327 WHEREAS, the Council of Virginia Archaeologists is dedicated to working with public and private groups, property owners, and individuals to identify, protect, and interpret archaeological sites, artifacts, and elements of material culture that contribute to a better understanding of history at the local, regional, state, and national levels; and

2529 WHEREAS, the Council of Virginia Archaeologists comprises more than 100 professional archaeologists from every region of the Commonwealth and every sector of archaeology; and

2731 WHEREAS, the Council of Virginia Archaeologists partners with the Archeological Society of Virginia and DHR to advance the training of avocational archaeologists through the Archeological Technician Program and publish multiple edited volumes that serve as foundational references for the archaeological exploration of the thousands of years of the Commonwealth's buried past; now, therefore, be it

2933 RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Council of Virginia Archaeologists on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

3135 RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to David A. Brown, president of the Council of Virginia Archaeologists, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the society's work to safeguard the Commonwealth's valuable cultural and historical resources.
