HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 571

Commending the Alexandria Historical Society.

WHEREAS, the Alexandria Historical Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to researching, preserving, and sharing Alexandria's history through a variety of endeavors, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024; and

WHEREAS, the Alexandria Historical Society publishes The Alexandria Chronicle and regular newsletters, while also maintaining an active social media presence, to share anecdotes from Alexandria's history, information from recent lectures sponsored by the organization, and perspectives on history in general; and

WHEREAS, the Alexandria Historical Society hosts talks, tours, and special events throughout the year that offer its members and the public an opportunity to learn more about Alexandria's history from expert historians, genealogists, and preservationists; and

WHEREAS, the Alexandria Historical Society annually presents a number of awards, such as its T. Michael Miller Award, to recognize research historians and history students who have made notable contributions to the study of Alexandria's history; and

WHEREAS, members of the Alexandria Historical Society have given generously of their time and expertise through their service with the Alexandria Archaeological Commission and the Historic Alexandria Resources Commission; and

WHEREAS, the accomplishments of the Alexandria Historical Society are a result of the hard work and dedication of the organization's all-volunteer staff, who have given countless hours over the years to foster greater awareness of and interest in Alexandria's history; and

WHEREAS, to honor its golden anniversary, the Alexandria Historical Society initiated several new events and experiences for the benefit of its members and the public, including its History Behind the Scenes event series, the Golden Grants Program, and the Golden Charter Membership Program; and

WHEREAS, by cultivating a greater understanding of local history, the Alexandria Historical Society has given Alexandria residents a better perspective on their past and inspired their vision for the future; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Alexandria Historical Society on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Alexandria Historical Society as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the organization's role in preserving and promoting the history of Alexandria, the Commonwealth, and the nation.
