2025 SESSION ENROLLED HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 620 Commending NORTH of the JAMES magazine. Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 17, 2025 Agreed to by the Senate, February 19, 2025 WHEREAS, for 30 years, NORTH of the JAMES magazine has provided exceptional community-focused journalism to the residents of Northside Richmond and readers throughout the Greater Richmond area; and WHEREAS, originally known as Northside, NORTH of the JAMES was established in 1994 by Charles McGuigan, who had recently moved to the Bellevue neighborhood and sought to build a stronger sense of community in the area by creating a local interest magazine; and WHEREAS, from its humble beginnings in a garage in the neighborhood of Bellevue, NORTH of the JAMES has grown to produce more than 300 issues representing more than two million words, countless articles, and more than 1,000 interviews with leading Virginians; and WHEREAS, NORTH of the JAMES has provided engaging articles on the people, places, and stories of the Richmond area, highlighting local artists, businesses, and community leaders, as well as informative pieces on state and national issues; and WHEREAS, as a member of the Virginia Press Association, NORTH of the JAMES adheres to the highest standards of journalistic integrity while also providing an alternative to larger corporate media sources; and WHEREAS, NORTH of the JAMES has won numerous awards from the Virginia Press Association for its writing, photography, and design; and WHEREAS, NORTH of the JAMES will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a special commemorative issue featuring 30 standout stories from across the magazine's history; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend NORTH of the JAMES magazine on the occasion of its 30th anniversary of service to the Richmond community; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Charles McGuigan, founder of NORTH of the JAMES magazine, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the publication's legacy of journalistic achievements.
