HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 646

Commending Jimmie H. Barrett.

WHEREAS, Jimmie H. Barrett, a distinguished law-enforcement officer, retired from the Arlington County Sheriff's Office with the rank of major on January 3, 2025, completing more than three decades of service; and

WHEREAS, after receiving a bachelor's degree from Texas Lutheran University in 1989, Jimmie Barrett settled in the Commonwealth and joined the Arlington County Sheriff's Office on August 24, 1992; and

WHEREAS, Jimmie Barrett rose steadily through the ranks and was promoted to major in 2015; during his tenure with the Arlington County Sheriff's Office, he served as director of judicial services, director of corrections, court security supervisor, assistant training officer, and housing unit deputy, among other leadership roles; and

WHEREAS, a recognized expert on court security, Jimmie Barrett was a key member of the Supreme Court of Virginia's Judicial Security Committee, which designed and implemented statewide court security training procedures; he also authored the book Protecting Court: A Practitioner's Guide to Court Security in 2009; and

WHEREAS, over the course of his career, Jimmie Barrett continued his education by earning a master's degree from George Mason University and certification as a jail manager from the American Jail Association, as well as graduating from the Leadership Arlington program in 2016; and

WHEREAS, Jimmie Barrett earned numerous awards and accolades for his professional accomplishments, including an Outstanding Young Deputy Sheriff award from the Arlington County Jaycees, a Valor Award for Heroic Action from the Arlington County Chamber of Commerce, and two Meritorious Service Awards and a Life Saving Award from the Arlington County Sheriff's Office; and

WHEREAS, Jimmie Barrett served Arlington County residents with the utmost dedication, integrity, and distinction and looks forward to seeking new opportunities to support the community after his well-earned retirement; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Jimmie H. Barrett for his outstanding achievements as a law-enforcement officer on the occasion of his retirement from the Arlington County Sheriff's Office; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jimmie H. Barrett as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his dedication to serving and protecting the residents of Arlington County.
