1519 WHEREAS, Colonel Gerald William Hyland, USAF, Ret., an honorable veteran, accomplished attorney, esteemed public servant, and beloved member of the Fairfax County community, died on January 19, 2025; and

17-WHEREAS, born in Holden, Massachusetts, Colonel Gerald Gerry William Hyland, USAF, Ret., attended College of the Holy Cross before earning his juris doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center; and

1923 WHEREAS, Gerry Hyland served his country with honor and distinction as a reservist in the United States Air Force with the Judge Advocate General's Office, for four years of active duty in Normandy, and for 30 more years in the Air Force Reserve Command; and

2125 WHEREAS, Gerry Hyland embarked upon a legal career that spanned a half-century as legislative counsel for the Credit Union National Association; in 1976, he founded the law firm Hyland & Hyland alongside his wife, Carmen, where he worked tirelessly for the benefit of his clients; and

2327 WHEREAS, Gerry Hyland made his first foray into public service as a member of the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals; then, in 1987, he was elected Mount Vernon District Supervisor on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, a position in which he would faithfully serve his constituents for 28 years; and

2529 WHEREAS, as a member of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Gerry Hyland was dedicated to listening to the concerns of all constituents and ensuring local government responded to those concerns with several initiatives promoting health, prosperity, and well-being; and

2731 WHEREAS, in recognition of Gerry Hyland's efforts, Fairfax County rededicated the South County Government Center as the Gerry Hyland Government Center in his honor in 2019; and

2933 WHEREAS, Gerry Hyland made an impact on the state and national level as chair of the Virginia Railway Express, president of the Virginia Association of Counties, and member of the National Association of Counties board of directors; and

3135 WHEREAS, after his family and public service, Gerry Hyland found his greatest joy at his farm in Parksley, where he grew vegetables, raised livestock, and caught crabs off his dock to share with friends and loved ones; and

3337 WHEREAS, preceded in death by his wife, Carmen, and his companion, Shirley, Gerry Hyland will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his daughter, Gigi, and her family and by numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

3539 RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Colonel Gerald William Hyland, USAF, Ret., a distinguished member of the Fairfax County community whose dedication and legacy of service inspired all who knew him; and, be it
