1519 WHEREAS, Literacy for Life, a nonprofit organization that empowers adult learners by helping them build foundational literacy skills, has served the Williamsburg community for 50 years; and

1721 WHEREAS, Literacy for Life began in 1975 as an adult literacy program for employees of the College of William & Mary, then expanded its service to the surrounding community after becoming affiliated with the United Way; and

1923 WHEREAS, from its humble beginnings with approximately 30 students, Literacy for Life has grown to serve more than 1,000 students per year from its flagship location in Williamsburg and the Peninsula Center in Hampton; and

2125 WHEREAS, Literacy for Life offers reading, writing, math skills, and English language instruction through in-person and virtual classes, as well as one-to-one tutoring; the organization helps students improve basic skills while making progress toward personal or professional goals, such as obtaining United States citizenship, acquiring a drivers' license, or pursuing an academic degree; and

2327 WHEREAS, with more than 250 trained volunteers, Literacy for Life is able to provide individualized lessons that ensure every student can meet their goals in a timely and effective manner; and

2529 WHEREAS, Literacy for Life has also created unique programs to address specific community needs, including EmployEd to help learners develop workplace skills, TechConnect for computer skills, the On the Money financial literacy program, and the HEAL Program, which helps adults learn medical terms and navigate the health care system; and

2731 WHEREAS, over the course of its history, Literacy for Life has helped countless students become more independent and pursue new opportunities to enhance their quality of life and better serve their communities; now, therefore, be it

2933 RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Literacy for Life on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

3135 RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Literacy for Life as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the organization's mission to help adults become more engaged in their communities and achieve their fullest potential in careers.
