2025 SESSION ENROLLED HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 695 Commending Virginia History Day students and teachers. Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 18, 2025 Agreed to by the Senate, February 20, 2025 WHEREAS, 2024 marked the 50th anniversary of the National History Day program, a national educational nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the teaching and learning of history; and WHEREAS, the Virginia Museum of History & Culture has organized the Virginia affiliate of National History Day, known as Virginia History Day, since 2017, providing teacher professional development, supporting student research, and running the Virginia History Day contests; and WHEREAS, Virginia History Day encourages thousands of elementary, middle, and high school students from across the Commonwealth to engage in historical research every year; and WHEREAS, every spring, the Virginia Museum of History & Culture works with local partners to implement seven Virginia History Day regional contests, including George Washington's Mount Vernon, the Office of Historic Alexandria, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum, Brightpoint Community College, the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution, Central Virginia Community College, Radford University, and Emory & Henry University; and WHEREAS, every April, hundreds of students from across the Commonwealth gather at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture in Richmond for the Virginia History Day state contest, competing for prizes and several thousand dollars in scholarship awards; and WHEREAS, every year, nearly a hundred Virginia students qualify at the Virginia History Day state contest for the National History Day contest, where they compete against more than 3,000 students from around the world; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend all past, present, and future Virginia History Day students and teachers on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of National History Day; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Virginia Museum of History & Culture as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for its work to promote the study of history across the Commonwealth and its service to the countless students and teachers who have participated in the Virginia History Day program.
