HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 696

Commending the McLean Citizens Association.

WHEREAS, the McLean Citizens Association, a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization, has served as the unofficial town hall forum for residents of McLean for 110 years, allowing generations of community members to learn about and voice their concerns on important issues; and

WHEREAS, originally known as the McLean School and Civic League, the McLean Citizens Association was founded in 1914 and has served since that time as the Voice of McLean; and

WHEREAS, the McLean Citizens Association provides a forum where all residents of McLean, an unincorporated community in Fairfax County, can come together to address local issues and to advocate for solutions that serve the interests and values of the community; and

WHEREAS, the McLean Citizens Association develops resolutions urging governmental officials to take actions on matters of local concern, sends correspondence or speaks at local government hearings to advocate for the community, and sponsors informational forums where residents can hear from and question local elected officials and staff; and

WHEREAS, the charitable arm of the McLean Citizens Association, the McLean Community Foundation, provides grants to other local nonprofit organizations to support community members in need and enhance the overall quality of life in McLean; and

WHEREAS, representatives of the McLean Citizens Association serve in an ongoing capacity on the Greater Tysons Citizens Coalition, the McLean Planning Committee, the McLean Revitalization Corporation, and the McLean Community Center governing board; and

WHEREAS, the McLean Citizens Association also maintains a liaison with many local governmental and nongovernmental organizations and frequently has representatives on temporary task forces that are organized by local governmental officials; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the McLean Citizens Association on the occasion of its 110th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the McLean Citizens Association as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the organization's commitment to community leadership and advocacy.
