HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 709

Celebrating the life of Joseph Haynes Monk.

WHEREAS, Joseph Haynes Monk, an acclaimed artist and craftsman, esteemed educator, and beloved member of the Amherst and Richmond communities, died on December 4, 2024; and

WHEREAS, a native of Beckley, West Virginia, Joseph Monk embarked upon his professional career as a resident craftsman at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, where he mastered his technical abilities and honed his creative vision; and

WHEREAS, for many years, Joseph Monk served as a ceramics and sculpture professor at Sweet Briar College, guiding and encouraging an untold number of students in their artistic pursuits; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Monk was admired by all who knew him for his ability to see beauty in every object and space, as well as for the passion and enthusiasm that he brought to his work; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Monk was a generous mentor who gave abundantly of his imagination, resources, and talents to inspire others to build and create; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Monk was a devoted family man who supported his wife and daughters in all of their endeavors; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Monk will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his loving wife of 55 years, Suny; his daughters, Chatham and Mavora, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Joseph Haynes Monk, a revered member of the Amherst and Richmond communities whose creativity, kindness, and compassion made an impact on countless lives; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joseph Haynes Monk as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
