1519 WHEREAS, Nancy Howell Agee, a nationally recognized healthcare leader who served as chief executive officer of Carilion Clinic in Roanoke for more than a decade, retired on September 30, 2024; and

1721 WHEREAS, Nancy Howell Agee began her career in healthcare in 1973 as a nurse at what was then Roanoke Memorial Hospital; she then went on to earn a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Virginia School of Nursing in 1979 and a master's degree in nursing from the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University and to complete graduate studies at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University; and

1923 WHEREAS, prior to becoming chief executive officer at Carilion Clinic, Nancy Howell Agee served as the health system's chief operating officer and vice president, leading its transformation from a collection of hospitals into a fully integrated, physician-led clinic, which included a partnership with Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University to establish the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech-Carilion; and

2125 WHEREAS, in 2011, Nancy Howell Agee became the first female chief executive officer in the history of Carilion Clinic, taking the helm of a multi-faceted healthcare system that incorporates seven hospitals and more than 250 physician practices and that annually provides care to approximately one million people living in the Commonwealth and West Virginia; and

2327 WHEREAS, Nancy Howell Agee's tenure at Carilion Clinic was defined by her unwavering commitment to advancing the health system by increasing efficiency, lowering costs, and improving health outcomes for all patients; and

2529 WHEREAS, as a testament to her leadership and expertise, Nancy Howell Agee was named chair of the American Hospital Association's board of trustees in 2018; she has also supported the healthcare industry as a member of the board of commissioners for The Joint Commission and as chair of the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association and the Virginia Center for Health Innovation; and

2731 WHEREAS, perennially recognized as one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare and one of the Top 25 Women Leaders in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare, Nancy Howell Agee's impressive list of accolades also includes honorary doctorates from Roanoke College and the former Jefferson College of Health Sciences, the 2017 Virginia Business Person of the Year award from Virginia Business, and the Gail L. Warden Leadership Excellence Award from the National Center for Healthcare Leadership; and

2933 WHEREAS, in addition to her accomplishments in the healthcare industry, Nancy Howell Agee has made significant contributions to the Commonwealth through her leadership of numerous statewide organizations, including the Growth and Opportunity Virginia (GO Virginia) board of directors, the Virginia Business Council, the Virginia Business Higher Education Council, and the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges; and

3135 WHEREAS, Nancy Howell Agee has received numerous awards and recommendations, including being recognized as the Virginia Business Person of the Year in 2017 by Virginia Business magazine and the Virginia Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024; and

3337 WHEREAS, following her retirement, Nancy Howell Agee will serve as chief executive officer emeritus of Carilion Clinic until September 2025, ensuring the health system will continue to expand its philanthropic endeavors, cultivate meaningful partnerships, and enhance its reputation both statewide and nationally; now, therefore, be it

3539 RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Nancy Howell Agee for her legacy of service on the occasion of her retirement as chief executive officer of Carilion Clinic; and, be it

3741 RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Nancy Howell Agee as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for her contributions to Southwest Virginia and the Commonwealth and best wishes for a rewarding and fulfilling retirement.
