2025 SESSION ENROLLED HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 723 Celebrating the life of Lewis S. Wiley. Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 18, 2025 Agreed to by the Senate, February 20, 2025 WHEREAS, Lewis S. Wiley, a widely-respected horseman and cattle farmer and longtime Fauquier County resident, passed away peacefully at his family's home, Gordonsdale Farm, in The Plains on August 11, 2024, at the age of 86; and WHEREAS, Lewis Wiley was born and raised in Salem, where he attended North Cross School with the very first class of students and Andrew Lewis High School; he subsequently attended The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, where he thrived as a member of the football, wrestling, and track teams before graduating in 1957; and WHEREAS, Lewis Wiley went on to graduate from the University of Virginia in 1962, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity; and WHEREAS, Lewis Wiley called his thoroughbred horse farm, Gordonsdale Farm, home for more than 50 years, spending many mornings at the Middleburg Training Center, watching and training horses and cultivating some of his favorite memories; and WHEREAS, as an owner, trainer, steward, and spectator, Lewis Wiley was a fixture at the local steeplechase races; and WHEREAS, while he loved traveling for hunting and horse sales around the Commonwealth and country, Lewis Wiley loved nothing more than seeing the highway sign welcoming him back to Fauquier County and his beloved farm; and WHEREAS, in addition to his dedication to his horses, Lewis Wiley admirably served on the board of Marshall National Bank and as vice chair of Oak View Bank; and WHEREAS, predeceased by his parents, James and Camille; his stepmother, Mary; his stepfather, Sully; and his siblings James, Karen, Langhorne, and Nelson, Lewis Wiley will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his daughters, Elizabeth and Sheila; his grandchildren, Molly and William; and his stepbrother, Lewis; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Lewis S. Wiley, a revered member of The Plains community, whose kindness, compassion, and generosity touched countless lives; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lewis S. Wiley as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
