HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 680
Celebrating the life of Algie Gray Crouse.
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 17, 2025
WHEREAS, Algie Gray Crouse, an honorable veteran, accomplished businessman, and active and beloved member of the Marion community, died on January 20, 2025; and
WHEREAS, immediately after he graduated from Marion High School in 1944, Algie Crouse was drafted into the United States Army, and he served his country with honor and distinction as a member of the 104th Infantry Division for two years during World War II; he was notably Smyth County's last surviving World War II veteran at the time of his death; and
WHEREAS, following his service, Algie Crouse taught in a one-room school for one year, worked for the Brunswick Corporation for four years, and joined the firm of the Lemmon Transport Company in 1951; and
WHEREAS, after dutifully working at the Lemmon Transport Company for 19 years, Algie Crouse acquired an ownership stake in the company that he held for 14 years until he sold his interests in 1984 and retired; and
WHEREAS, Algie Crouse supported his industry as a member of the American Trucking Association, the National Accounting and Finance Council, and the Virginia Highway Users Association; and
WHEREAS, Algie Crouse made an impact in his community as chair of The Salvation Army of Smyth County for ten years, director of the First National Bank of Saltville and BBT Bank for several years, director of the Settlers Museum of Southwest Virginia, and life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4667 in Marion; and
WHEREAS, guided throughout his life by his faith, Algie Crouse enjoyed worship and fellowship with his community at First United Methodist Church in Marion for many years; and
WHEREAS, preceded in death by his wife of nearly 56 years, Patsy, Algie Crouse will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his nieces, Estelle and Vicky; his nephew, William; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Algie Gray Crouse, a treasured member of the Marion community whose dedication and legacy of service inspired all who knew him; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Algie Gray Crouse as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
