2025 SESSION ENROLLED HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 886 Celebrating the life of Derek Dyson. Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 22, 2025 WHEREAS, Derek Dyson, a Norfolk native and an esteemed attorney and community leader in Washington, D.C., died on October 2, 2024; and WHEREAS, Derek Dyson was born in Norfolk and began to develop his deep faith at a young age as a member of Olive Grove Baptist Church; he attended Norfolk Public Schools, graduating from Norview High School, then earned a bachelor's degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; and WHEREAS, Derek Dyson worked for the U.S. Department of the Navy as a contracting officer, then pursued a master's degree from the Florida Institute of Technology and a law degree from American University; and WHEREAS, as a student law clerk, Derek Dyson gained experience with the White House Situation Support Staff and the U.S. Department of Energy's Federal Energy Regulatory Commission; and WHEREAS, Derek Dyson briefly worked for the law firm Hunton & Williams in Richmond, then spent 20 years working for the firm Duncan, Weinberg, Genzer & Pembroke, P.C., where he was welcomed as a partner in 2006; and WHEREAS, over the course of his career, Derek Dyson handled a wide range of complex cases related to energy issues for clients across the United States and around the world; he was highly respected in his field and was a member of several peer and professional organizations; and WHEREAS, while living in the Washington, D.C., area, Derek Dyson was a champion for the community on H Street and served on the board of directors of H Street Main Street, which supported business development and community enhancement efforts; and WHEREAS, in January 2022, Derek Dyson fulfilled a lifelong dream to run a company, becoming president and chief executive officer of Today's Power, Inc., in Little Rock, Arkansas, which developed utility-scale solar energy storage systems and electric vehicle charging stations across the state; and WHEREAS, Derek Dyson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his children, Robbie and Cecelia, and their families and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Derek Dyson; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Derek Dyson as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
