SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 297

Commending the Rotary Club of Woodstock.

WHEREAS, for 100 years, the Rotary Club of Woodstock has enhanced the quality of life for communities in the Commonwealth and around the world through a wide range of service initiatives; and

WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Woodstock received its charter from Rotary International on February 20, 1925; and

WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Woodstock has been a longtime advocate of higher education, providing more than $270,000 in scholarships to help students further their educational and career goals after graduation from high school; and

WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Woodstock sponsors a Rotary Interact Club at Central High School, which teaches upcoming young leaders the principles behind Rotary International's motto of Service above Self; and

WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Woodstock has supported recreational amenities through generous funding projects and hundreds of volunteer hours at Woodstock's original town park, Woodstock Recreational Park, now named for former Woodstock mayor and longtime Rotarian W.O. Riley; and

WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Woodstock's major community charitable event, Santa Express, delivers clothing, food, and toys to hundreds of children, families, and elderly residents in need on Christmas Eve every year; and

WHEREAS, over the course of its long and storied history, the Rotary Club of Woodstock has supported numerous educational and athletic programs in local schools, the establishment of the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock, and dozens of local charities; and

WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Woodstock has worked with a global network of fellow Rotarians to participate in programs aimed at eradicating polio from the face of the earth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Rotary Club of Woodstock on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Rotary Club of Woodstock as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for its legacy of contributions to the Woodstock community.
