SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 298

Commending Peace Camp at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington.

WHEREAS, for nearly three decades, Peace Camp at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington has provided an intergenerational, multicultural, and collaborative summer day camp experience that helps young people develop peace building skills; and

WHEREAS, established in 1997, Peace Camp was created by Little Friends for Peace and has cultivated a longstanding partnership with the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington based on shared fundamental values of a commitment to nonviolence and respect for the worth and dignity of every individual; and

WHEREAS, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington supports Peace Camp by providing space for program events and offering scholarships to young people in need, ensuring greater participation both by members of the congregation and the wider community; and

WHEREAS, Peace Camp currently serves more than 60 campers between the ages of five and 18 for two weeks every summer, and Little Friends for Peace works with camp staff to ensure that the racial and cultural diversity of the community is reflected in each class of campers; and

WHEREAS, Little Friends for Peace trains teen counselors and adult camp leaders to demonstrate how to address conflict through peaceful means using a wide range of engaging lessons and fun activities; and

WHEREAS, Peace Camp provides a safe space for young people to enjoy new experiences, develop respect for themselves and others, hone leadership skills, and learn how to create a more peaceful world; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Peace Camp at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington for its years of service to young people in Northern Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Peace Camp at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the organization's important mission.
