2025 SESSION ENROLLED SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 328 Celebrating the life of Michele Irene Chapman. Agreed to by the Senate, February 6, 2025 Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 10, 2025 WHEREAS, Michele Irene Chapman, a dedicated public servant, influential advocate for affordable housing, and beloved member of the Alexandria community, died on July 19, 2024; and WHEREAS, Michele Irene Chapman graduated in 1974 from T.C. Williams High School now known as Alexandria City High School before continuing her educational journey at Northern Virginia Community College; and WHEREAS, Michele Chapman was a hardworking civil servant who served as an office manager with the United States Department of Labor and later with Alexandria City Public Schools, where she retired; and WHEREAS, Michele Chapman was a tireless champion for affordable housing in Alexandria who advanced her cause as board chair of the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority and with the Alexandria Affordable Housing Advisory Committee; and WHEREAS, affectionately known as Mama Chapman to many, Michele Chapman's commitment to her community and the well-being of others was evidenced in her work with Alexandria's Economic Opportunities Commission, the Alexandria Early Childhood Commission, the Boy Scouts of America, the Northern Virginia Urban League's Resource Mothers program, and Jack and Jill of America, Inc.; and WHEREAS, guided throughout her life by her faith, Michele Chapman was a devoted member of Alfred Street Baptist Church for nearly 30 years, where she was active with several ministries and a mentor to many of her fellow congregants; and WHEREAS, preceded in death by her husband Richard and her daughter Jennifer, Michele Chapman will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her loving son, John, and his family; and by numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Michele Irene Chapman, a cherished member of the Alexandria community whose grace, integrity, and compassion made an impact on countless lives; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Michele Irene Chapman as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory.
