SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 343
Commending Vidya Ambati.

WHEREAS, Vidya Ambati, a student at Albemarle High School, was selected as a 2024 Davidson Fellow by the Davidson Institute for her groundbreaking research into treatments for arthritis; and
WHEREAS, Vidya Ambati was inspired to study arthritis prevention based on her own family members' experiences with the condition and worked with a team of advisors from the University of Virginia to research novel treatments; and
WHEREAS, in the course of her research, Vidya Ambati discovered that the medication haloperidol, which is used to treat mental and behavioral health conditions, may suppress both rheumatoid arthritis and gout, conditions that affect more than 200 million people worldwide; and
WHEREAS, after Vidya Ambati unveiled her breakthrough discovery, which has the potential to reshape the fight against arthritis, the University of Virginia filed four patents around the technology and began preparing clinical trials; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of her achievement, Vidya Ambati was selected by the Davidson Institute as one of only 20 students nationwide to be named as a 2024 Davidson Fellow and one of only four students to earn the award's top prize, a $50,000 college scholarship; and
WHEREAS, in addition to her work with the University of Virginia, Vidya Ambati runs an international webinar that connects students around the world with mentors in the scientific community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Vidya Ambati on the occasion of her selection as a 2024 Davidson Fellow for her contributions to medical science; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Vidya Ambati as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for her exceptional accomplishments and best wishes for the future.
